Chapter Six

Vaser

It took a lot of effort to hold the gargoyle back so he didn’t mess everything up for both of us. I was just as ready to kill the angel for daring to go anywhere near my mate, but there were better, subtler ways to deal with it instead of barging in fists swinging and scaring the female. The stubborn fuck slug me in the jaw a few times before he successfully dislodged me after I yanked him away from her window. The poor female screamed from the top of her lungs when she looked through the glass and came face to face with his ugly mug. I should’ve left him in New York City to find his own way to her. Playing nice bit off a big chunk off my ass.

“A disgrace to all demon kind, Vaser, that’s what you are.” Grumbling under my breath, I rubbed at my smarting jaw, the stubble rasping across my palm. Tyler’s fists were like slamming my head against a rock, that motherfucker.

“You will lose both arms next time you touch me,” Tyler snarled, his yellow eyes glowing menacingly with venom.

“Keep your voice down you dumb fuck.” Snarling, I glanced at the house to make sure we were out of sight. “I should leave you to fend for yourself. You just scared the life out of her, I’m sure that will work in your favor when it’s time to face her and tell her you’re her mate.”

“There is an Archangel inside her home.” Anger burned in my gut when he spoke to me as if I was a simpleton.

“You think I don’t know that?” Teeth grinding, I kept my voice barely above a whisper. “Did you take a good look at her? The Gods can come and have a party in that house and none will dare put one finger on her. Just like the two of us, they’ll gape openmouthed at the female.”

Tyler’s head jerked to the side when voices floated from inside the house, and all talk was forgotten the moment the female screamed again. Both of us froze when a loud screech sounded that was quickly followed by the crashing of wood. Tyler locked his wide eyes on mine and we stood frozen for long moments, holding our breath. Could I have been wrong? Was the mate bond making me see her as the most beautiful creature I’d ever laid eyes on? The time stretched into eternity while my mind whirled from one scenario to another.

Tyler was the first to move. He started for the window before we both heard the voice of the female loud and clear. “Stay there or I’ll swing this at your head, too.” The lyrical tone caressed my soul as it reached my ears. Tyler shivered when he heard it, too. More mumbling came from the house before there was a thump. I had no time to utter a word before the gargoyle spun on his heel and stormed for the front of the house. With a jolt, I rushed after him and took the corner just in time to see him punch both fists at our mate’s front door. Murder was written all over his stone-hard face. The wood burst inward like confetti and he disappeared inside.

“Fuck!” With a burst of speed, I bolted after him. What met me when I crossed the threshold was the worst scenario I could’ve imagined.

“Who the hell are you?” the female screamed, her voice high-pitched and shaky from fear.

“Damn it.” Groaning, I brushed a hand over my face.

“You!” she screeched, stabbing a utensil in front of her in my direction before swinging it between Tyler and me to ward us off. “You followed me home, you asshole. Get the hell out of here before I call the cops.”

“Take it easy.” Keeping my voice soft and soothing, I allowed myself the use of my powers to calm her down. “We mean you no harm.”

Eyes so light grey they looked like crystal jewels on her beautiful face narrowed on me as her body stiffened. “I knew you weren’t human,” she spat through clenched teeth. “Don’t you dare use your magic on me or I’ll fry you where you stand.”

The air shifted around us with a swirl of color, and my skin felt like it was being flayed from my bones. Tyler stood dumbfounded while he partly blocked me from her ire, but it still wasn’t enough to stop my fist from clenching against the stabbing pain. Fire burned through me, locking my muscles so I couldn’t move. In the midst of all the torrent flung our way, all I could do was wonder what type of creature she was to be able to hold a high-ranking demon and a gargoyle at the same time.

“Get out of my house,” the female snarled at us, fury twisting her angelic face.

A terrifying growl came from Tyler, and I bulked at the audacity of the dumb fuck for adding more shit that I’d have to clean up if I wanted my mate. If she didn’t end up killing us right then, that was. Another deep grumble like grinding rocks followed, and I realized he was reacting to the movements of our mate. The female didn’t take her eyes off us, but she kept inching toward the entrance of one of the rooms, blocking it with her body. I didn’t need to be a genius to figure out that was where the bleeding angel was.

She was protecting him.

From us.

The truth slapped me like the roof of the house falling on my head.

“We mean no harm.” I sounded pained, but I couldn’t give a fuck. “To you or the angel you have here.”

“What?” I managed to startle her enough that the power trying to burn me to ashes disappeared in an instant. “What did you say?”

Rolling my neck to get rid of the discomfort her magic had caused me—unsuccessfully I might add—I blew out a deep breath.Think Vaser, think.“We wanted to discuss certain things with you when we heard you scream.” The suspicious way she narrowed her eyes on me was not promising, but I plowed through it. “We thought you were in danger and wanted to help, that is all. Neither I, nor my … associate will harm you in any way. You have my word.” I could see she was about to kick us out when the mute rock in front of me spoke for the first time.

“The demon speaks the truth.” Tyler’s deep voice bounced off the walls in the narrow hallway we were crowding.

“Demon,” the female deadpanned, thankfully aiming her glare at the gargoyle. “There is an angel in my living room, your buddy over there is a demon, and that makes you what, exactly?”

“Shifter.” His broad shoulders twitched in a barely there shrug. “I am a gargoyle.”

Silence spread around us, so heavy and charged it was oppressive. I didn’t dare move, or breathe for that matter, as my mate stared from Tyler to me and back, the hand brandishing the utensil trembling in front of her. A ping stabbed me in the chest that I was one of the reasons causing her fear, but thanks to the dumb fuck there was nothing I could do to change that. She would either give us the time of the day and hear us out, or she’d send us on our way. I wasn’t giving up on my mate. I’d just have to think of another way to worm my way into her life.

She laughed.
