“Feel better? You seemed tired, so I let you sleep.”
He reached for me, and I sidestepped his hand.
“What are you feeding me?”
His lips were a thin line as he watched me. Maybe I didn’t want to make anything easy on him, but I couldn’t seem to not see him. He was my light even if he kidnapped me again.
“Steak. Is that okay with you?”
My stomach rumbled again.
“Okay. Fine. Steak is worth you letting me sleep. Don’t do it again though. I thought you left.”
He shrugged, and this time when he reached for me, I let him. The hard grip of his hands on my upper arms didn’t give me a ton of choice though.
“Glad the food is to your satisfaction. Sit. Emilee loves that you’re here, so she’ll go all out. While she prepares your plate, we need to talk.”
I rolled my eyes without much thought.
“Stop rolling your eyes at me. You need to get on board with the fact you are stuck with me and the shit that comes with me. Roll them again and I’ll have to show you what disobedience gets you.”
This was a game I liked, I pulled my hands out of the pathetic excuse for pockets and slid them up his stomach to his pecs. I knew these rules.
“Oh really? Is my big bad mafia boyfriend going to punish me?” He slid his hands over my ass and squeezed.
“Fuck, princess. I might just take you back to bed right now if you keep looking at me like that.”
I batted my eyelashes and wanted to push him over whatever edge he thought he was controlling us from, too bad the sound of a forced sliding door made my stomach rumble.
“You can punish me later. Right now? I need to sink my teeth into that big juicy steak.” For good measure, I licked my lips and smirked before turning to Emilee.
“Did I interrupt something? God, it’s been so damn long since I’ve had a man here—”
She laughed as I watched Parks mime throwing up.
“Lord, cousin. I have to sit here and pretend like I didn’t know what you did to tire her out and you’re grossed out at me? Whatever. Halle, come eat before it gets cold.”
Emilee took a seat on the other side of the table while Parks pulled out my chair. Had we had a proper date? Well, one where we weren’t on a time frame?
I watched him but took the seat and waited for him to sit next to me.
I tried to distract myself from the strange sensations that I didn’t want to admit or think about. Jealousy? No, that didn’t seem right. Sadness? Maybe. Did I want to date? Date Parks? Was I okay dealing with him being engaged?
“Look, Halle. Eat, I can hear your stomach. I can also see the wheels turning in that pretty little head of yours. But stop. I need you safe. Emilee is pretty isolated here. No one will come out here.”
I huffed and slumped in my chair.
“He isn’t kidding. I get few to almost no visitors, and they all dump and run.”
I cut a chunk of steak and moaned as the juices hit my tongue.
“Dump?” I said after swallowing.
She tried to give me a smile or something like one, but she looked as dead on the outside as I had always thought I was on the inside.
“Yeah. The pigs out back? The brainchild of this guy right here. They dump the bodies and leave.”
He shifted and looked at her.
