Emilee pushed against me, and we walked out the exit, or rather the door I was being herded through. How these two had set a trap I wasn’t sure, but seeing Halle in all her glory walking through that door?
“You looked like an angel, princess.”
She leaned her head against my chest as we reached the parking lot where my cousin pointed to a car I recognized.
“I see you finally got to use your birthday present.”
She unlocked the somewhat impractical car.
“And who says I haven’t been cruising all over the countryside?”
I pressed my lips together and held my tongue.
“I’m never going to say anything that doesn’t get a smart-ass response, am I?”
Both women glared at me, and as if they were somehow cut from the same cloth, laughed together.
“Fuck me. I’m going to regret this. Aren’t I?” I shook my head but loved seeing something in life work. “Let’s get Halle’s head taken care of.”
Halle blinked a few more times at the bright light. Maybe I hated that she was hurting, but this felt right. The feel of her in my arms where she belonged? The feeling of her in my arms where I wanted her? It was all worth it.
“Wait. What about your bride?”
Emilee looked over my shoulder and Halle’s body seemed to stiffen. I turned around to see the heiress, her formerly white dress, more pink and Picasso than a wedding dress.
“Go home, Cara,” I said.
I turned back to the car.
“I don’t exactly have a home thanks to that crazy bitch, now do I?”
Her words quivered as she spoke, and it just pissed me off. The car was a few more steps, and I put Halle in the front seat. I glared at her, hoping she would, for once, just fucking stay. It helped I closed the door before I turned back to my jilted bride.
“From the looks of things, I think this might be better. Go find someone else to marry and suck the life out of that bastard. Lots of rich pricks around the city ready for a trophy wife.”
She took a few shaky steps and paused to straighten out her dress. She pushed up her hair like that was going to fix this.
“But I didn’t want them. I wanted you.”
I heard the car purr to life and the window roll down. Fuck me. I rubbed my temples.
“Cara, you don’t even know me. What? We’ve crossed paths all of five times? You were supposed to marry my cousin. Sorry, you dodged a bullet there. The only thing he was faithful to was his reflection. So take this as a gift and find something else. Pretty sure daddy’s money will pass to you. Or you have a trust fund to rely on. Have a nice life.”
I started to turn around, praying Halle didn’t make anything worse. Fuck, maybe I should worry about my cousin.
I saw movement from my peripheral and went to turn back to the wounded princess Cara when I saw a fucking shoe fly past me and Cara screamed.
“Owe you, bitch.”
I looked back at the open window.
“A shoe?”
Halle, dazed as fuck, still smiled.
“Well, wasn’t it better than a knife?”
I didn’t bother with Cara. She’d find her own way. I did, however, laugh harder than I’d ever laughed in my entire life as I yanked open the door of the car and lifted my perfect Rainbow into my arms.
