DRAKE
The fae woman remained hidden, her languid footsteps indenting the snow as she circled me, a light snow falling from the gray sky.
“What do you want?” I asked through chattering teeth.
Man, it was colder than before.
No answer.
“Did you summon me here?” My magic was silent, inactive.
She sighed, a phlegmy sound in her breath like a chest infection.
Summoning me through my power was impossible. Only I had access to it.
A crawling sensation manifested in my stomach. “Did you do this?”
Finally, she stopped walking, giving me a cackle. Its chilly aftermath practically tickled my bone marrow.
“I wanted to hear you speak again, Sweetvoice.”
“You have no right to?—”
“I may need you if things continue to be reckless.”
A wave of ice passed through me, her voice more unsettling than our last encounter. “Care to elaborate?”
More cackling. “Silly, Sweetvoice. I saidif. I’m watching. I’m waiting. Now go. Let us hope for a better outcome.”
“What do you mean?”
But I returned to my rainy world without an answer, choking on a sharp breath. Dizzy, so cold.
“Riley!” Isaac roared.
A bright burst of sunlight made my hands fly up to cover my face. Incredible heat bore down on me, like sitting too close to a fire with a row of electric heaters at my back. On full blast.
Shit. Riley. What’d happened?
Chapter 17
RILEY
Mud.
Still alive, but mud. A puddle breaking apart under the ferocity of the rain. Some of me running left, part of me going right, a big gloopy section oozing down a smelly drain.
Oh. My. God.
I saw the sky in three parts, as well as the darkness of the drain. Totally helpless, freaked out, my brain struggling to comprehend this sudden shift in physicality.
Damn. Damn. Damn.
Any moment now, I’d throw up. But mud didn’t puke. It required a throat and a stomach and a whole body.
No! What an incredible revelation!
I could do without the sarcasm,I rebutted the unhelpful inner voice.
