Absolutely.
Freaking.
Not.
She shook her head.
“No. If this is something dirty going on, and classified, that’s the last thing we need. If those soldiers were all killed for money that we funded the overlords with, that can’t come out. That’s going to be a shitmess. It was before Gabe, but still, he doesn’t like to sully up his presidency.”
“Uh, he’s literally marrying his Press Secretary, and his wife died a year ago. He’s sullying his presidency up plenty,” Zayn said. “He moved on fast.”
She said nothing.
At first.
“I’m the last one to get into people’s personal lives. I don’t ask why Stella sleeps with you, Zayn, or why Calyx likes the face on Remington,” she added.
Remmy laughed.
He wasn’t sure of that either.
“But what I can say is Gabe and Livy were getting a divorce, and no one knew. The marriage was over. That’s all I’m saying about the president, and only because I trust you guys. As for the rest, a bunch of murdered Marines on Gabe’s watch doesn’t sit well with him, or me.”
She pointed at the three Marines not far away that were her security detail.
They all knew she loved her some Marines.
Maura wanted clarification.
“So, by figuring out who killed the Marines, we are to find the people behind stealing the money in the first place?”
She nodded.
“And then tie up loose ends?” Jagger asked.
She nodded again.
“It’s more than that,” she admitted, tapping the redacted file that the CIA boned her good with when they marked it up.
“Oh, boy,” Jagger said. “I feel a good ol’ military boning about to happen, but from Elizabeth this time.”
She reassured him.
“I’m not the problem.”
That made them curious.
“Then who is?” Maura asked.
“Well, not only do I need you to find the dirty soldiers who stole the money and killed some people, but I need you to do it without one certain entity finding out.”
It had been the only thing her sources in the Pentagon could give her, and when they did, she knew it was going to take specialized help.
Mercenaries versus mercenaries.
They would have expected her to say the US government, but that was, technically, her. If they weren’t the ones they were hiding it from, then what were they up against?
“Who?” Remmy asked.
