When Gamble bent over and picked up his father’s broken reading glasses that were on the floor that someone smashed with their shoe, Poe had enough.

He ran.

He took off.

He’d been wrong.

He absolutely couldn’t handle it.

Ever.

Again.

Chapter Six

The Estate

After Dark

Eight P.M.

Yeah, unfortunately, he had a runner, and there was no shock there after everything that had happened. Gamble knew from the deaths that had been in his own family that it was absolutely normal to want to run.

So, while he searched the parent’s bedroom, he gave Poe his space to decompress.

The man was hurting, and what he needed was a few minutes to catch his breath and work through the pain. Being in the room wasn’t going to help him if he wasn’t mentally ready to face it down.

He’d learned that from Poe.

Unfortunately, he didn’t find anything that would help them get out of there quicker. The room search had come up a bust.

This was getting frustrating.

Now that he was done invading the privacy of two dead people, it was time to take care of Poe. What he needed was his full attention, so that he could help him work through what was to come.

Tomorrow was the wake, and he knew Poe was going to struggle with it.

How could he not?

Gamble had been there and done that himself not that long ago.

Since his man hadn’t eaten since lunch, Gamble wanted to start there. He’d feed his body, and then work on his heart. So, he headed down to the kitchen and rooted around in the refrigerator.

It.

Was.

Massive.

Inside were all kinds of things, and he was pretty sure they were the prep for tomorrow’s wake and cocktails after to celebrate Poe’s dukedom.

So, he left them alone.

Instead, he went with something simple. He wasn’t a chef, and he could only make basic things. If Poe wanted gourmet food, he was definitely out of luck when it came to that.

Only, Gamble remembered all of the times that Poe fed him when he was struggling, and that simple act of kindness made all of the difference to him.

So, he’d try.
