There was no reason to worry about that.

So, he kissed him on the lips.

“I’m hard to kill. Just be careful and listen to what I’ve asked you to do.”

Poe simply nodded.

What more could he say?

And then with that, Gamble slipped into the weeds to go do his thing, and Poe sat there silently, listening to see if anyone else was coming his way.

Now, he’d do one other thing.

WORRY.

A.

Lot.

If anything happened to Gamble, Poe was pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to carry on. The Marine was all he had left.

Meanwhile…

The mercenaries for hire were moving slowly through the pasture, keeping their eyes open.

A daytime assault on this place was dangerous, but they were getting desperate.

Von was getting desperate.

Earlier, the hired help had dropped the ball, and got himself shot in the arm. Luckily for him, it was just a graze, but now, they were floundering in finding that key.

The boss was pissed.

“They have to be out here. That one horse is saddled up,” the man said. “The attempt this morning at the house didn’t go well.”

The other man looked around.

“I don’t like this. The guy he’s with is dangerous. If we encounter him…”

The first guy shrugged.

“So shoot him. Your gun isn’t afraid of him, is it?” he asked, sarcastically.

The man rolled his eyes.

He’d heard from Von that the doctor had new help, since his last babysitter had died.

The question was, where was he getting the super soldiers?

Did he have an endless supply?

“We should probably split up and look for them. There are more of us than them. We have backup nearby. One of us will find them. Remember, Von wants the doctor in one piece. He doesn’t give a shit about the other man. Kill him.”

The mercenary nodded.

“Oh, it will be my pleasure,” he stated, grinning a little too brightly. “I like to earn my paycheck.”

Well, he hoped so.
