I spoke near her ear. “Yeah, we both did, while you just been dangling.”

“And so have you. Every time I looked up you either had a baby, a blunt, or a toddler in your arms.”

I laughed. “That’s a sign. I can’t help it if the kids love me.” The pool party was for the whole family, so that included the kids as well—Adonis, G’s twins, Kinga’s niece and his twins, as well as Sora’s daughter. A lotta fucking babies, but they all got passed around just as easy.

“That they do, but kids sense pure souls, baby.”

I kissed the side of her face. “I’on know nothing about a pure soul, bu?—”

“Not per se a pure soul, but they say kids are excellent judges of character. I don’t know how, but they know. You have a good heart and you’re a wonderful person, they see that too.” She attempted to nuzzle closer to me as if she could get any closer.

“I love the fuck outta you.” I pecked the side of her face again.

“You better.”

“Mama, Rennix, look.” Adonis called out to us, making us both look up. He dove into the pool about five seconds later. He went under then floated back up quickly.

“Where did he learn to swim?”

“While he was with my mother this summer. They were supposed to go on a cruise, but I didn’t like how long it would be. Two extra weeks plus the initial three was too long. I barelygo that long without seeing him but not being able to talk to him either would kill me.”

I nodded, watching Adonis closely. Yes, he could swim, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable until he was out of the deep end.

“Uh, Rennix. Why are you over here and not over there with the men?” Jade asked, fake mugging me.

I waved her off. “Because I’m minding. And this is my business.” I grabbed a handful of Caya’s thigh even though she was trying to swat me away.

“We know this is your business, Rennix. But damn, let my good sis breathe.”

Beyah’s real funny ass butted in. “She is breathing.” Then I looked down at her. “Baby, you breathing, right?”

She laughed. “Yes, I’m breathing perfectly fine.”

“Ol’ in love asses. I can’t stand y’all.” Jade waved us off while Beyah laughed. She couldn’t talk stuff because she knew how it went. I had seen her get down on baby bro plenty of times because he was too preoccupied or she just wanted that nigga’s attention. At first I didn’t get it, but on my life, I swear I did now.

Chapter 14

Rennix

I heard what my brother and Kinga said at the party, so after it was over and everybody was gone, I found my way into the office and ran the baby mama’s name. Not only did her Prius come back to her, but so did the address where it was registered. From what the maps showed, the address was of one of those rundown, apartment buildings on Chicago’s South Side. With some of my skills I was able to pull up the schematics for the building as well as any feed that should have been working to protect tenants, but it wasn’t even functional. Through my digital area sweep, I was able to tell because the only online CCTV were a few ring cameras and the city’s redlight cameras. I wasn’t too bad with the computer, so what was online wasn’t anything I couldn’t take offline for a minute. I slept on the information before taking it into the club with me this morning.

Before calling Reminisce, I tracked his location and saw he wasn’t too far from me. Unlike him I wouldn’t pop up on him, but I damn sure wanted to sometimes.

“Yo,” he answered on the first ring.

“Where you at?” I asked, hearing what sounded like exhaustion in his tone.

“Minding my fucking business. What do you need, Renny?”

I laughed because that meant he was on some creeping shit. “Lemme find out you went and saw about Debby after Jade dropped that plate off.

“Yo, fuck you. Now what do you want?”
