“My roommates will be there… eventually.”

"They’re at the club. You need a good night’s sleep. They’ll come back late and make noise.”

She hesitated for a moment, then sighed heavily. "Honestly, I don't really want to be by myself tonight. I suggested staying with Paula as much for her benefit as for mine."

“Besides, I'm better company than drunk roommates," I replied.

“I have to say, you're very convincing.” She gave me a small smile. “I’m all yours tonight, Duncan.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Duncan

I held Riley’s hand while I sped through the city. When I arrived in my parking lot, she got out of the car before I even managed to walk to her door. Clearly, she couldn't stay put.

As we headed to the entrance, I placed my arm around her shoulders again. She leaned into me completely.

She didn't say one word while I led her upstairs. But once we stepped inside the apartment, she turned to me. "Duncan, you think this is a good idea? I'm sorry, I didn't think this through at all. Jeremy?—”

"Jeremy is with my mom," I said slowly.

"Oh, right, I forgot." She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. "God, I'm all over the place."

"Riley, relax. I have everything under control."

The fight went right out of her. I felt the tension releasing from her body.

"You want a drink?" I offered.

She nodded vigorously. "I think it might help."

"I think so too." I took her hand, leading her into the kitchen. She sat on one of the breakfast chairs. "What do you want? I can open a bottle of wine."

"I think something stronger might be better."

"Bourbon on the rocks?"

"That sounds good," she said, resting her chin on one palm.

I poured my best bourbon and added two ice cubes before sliding it to her. She gripped the glass with both hands, taking a huge sip.

"Not so fast," I advised.

"You're right. But I can practically feel my legs relaxing."

"That's good." I walked to the other side of the counter, standing next to her. When she looked up at me, I put my hand on her cheek, and she sighed.

"Thank you for coming with me tonight."

"You didn't even need me. You were amazing back there."

She swallowed hard. "Yeah, but that was because you were there. I don't know how to explain it. Somehow, just knowing you were around made me feel stronger. Like I was drawing my strength from you. Does that make sense?"

"Yes, it fucking does," I assured her.

"I was angry but also so scared. I kept looking at my sister for any signs that she was hurt while putting the douchebag in his place."

"And you so fucking did. I'm proud of you."
