“I thought frozen custard was code for getting naked together.”

“Well, fuck.” I trap her chin between two fingers. “I like the way you think, Zee. We could take the frozen custard to go, and I could eat mine off your sexy, naked body.”

Her tongue darts out to lick her lips. “That sounds fun. Are we gonna do that in the car?”

I shake my head. “Nah. I want to take my time and savor every mouthful.”

The way her throat works when she swallows makes me instantly hard.

“That sounds so dirty, Lev. But I really like it.”

That’s why she’s so perfect for me. “Come on, then. We can drive through and get the custard and then go to my house. My parents won’t be home for hours, if they’re coming back at all. So we have all the time in the world to make the most of that custard.”

As I drive off the Pullins’ property, she looks pensive.

“You ok, Zee?” I ask. “If you changed your mind, we can just have the custard at the parlor and I can take you home.”

Her lips curl into a little amused smile. “No, your plan is perfect. I was just thinking that I hope the person who invented the drive through is rich. We have them to thank if we can get our frozen treat without leaving the car, and be at your house before it melts.”

“Let’s go, then.” I step on the gas, suddenly in a hurry to get Zara out of her little black dress.

Chapter 12

A Bad Girl

ZARA

Lev’s house is a modern mansion with lots of full-length windows and sweeping views of the beach behind it.

Even the detached garage where Lev parks his car is spotless and as big as the entire house Mom and I rented in Shell Cove.

Everything is tasteful and screams luxury and money at the same time; but the overall feeling I get walking through the open plan ground floor is a little odd. As I look at the expensive furniture and the modern art pieces that adorn the huge living room, I sense a lack of warmth. It feels as if everything had been selected and staged with the intention of showing the wealth of the owners, but the house doesn’t reflect their taste or personality. This looks more like one of those show homes that are staged to make you buy them, not like a home that’s lived in.

I follow Lev upstairs and the feeling changes completely when he ushers me into his bedroom.

This room looks perfect for him, exactly like what I would have expected. There’s a lot of dark wood and the curtains and upholstery, including the bedspread on the big king-sized bedadd a pop of colour with teal and gray accents, that’s the focal point of the room.

The full-length windows offer a view of the beach, where the ocean is lazily rolling back and forth in an eternal dance.

The room has a bedroom area, and a living area with a two-seater couch and a big flat screen TV; several game consoles are connected.

“This is really nice.” I say, turning to look at Lev, who just closed the door behind us.

“Yeah. Thank fuck my parents allowed me to choose what I wanted the last time they renovated. Everything else was done by their designer paying more attention to current trends than to what’s comfortable or even what suits my parents’ taste. After all, they only have this place for show. They spend most of their time in their office downtown.”

There’s a hint of sadness in Lev’s tone when he explains all that. He’s never made a mystery of the fact that his parents are barely ever at home, but it’s the first time he lets me see how much that really bothers him.

“It’s a shame they don’t spend more time with you.” I say, taking Lev’s hand in mine. “It’s totally their loss, though.”

He walks me toward his bed, encouraging me to sit next to him on the edge of the mattress.

“I’ve always spent more time at Chance’s house than here. Scott has been more of a father to me than my own dad.” He explains. “It used to bother me more when I was younger. Truth be told, once we got older, having a house with little to no parental presence was super cool.”

I roll my eyes. “I can only imagine all the shenanigans this room must have seen.”

“There were never any shenanigans in this room.” Lev’s tone is serious. “You’re the first girl I ever brought here.”

“No way.”
