When Minerva returned and took her seat, she looked at Rufus. “I put him in the room across from yours. I figured you might hear him if he moves around during the night.”

“He’ll be out for some time.” Thanatos sank down next to Gregory. “If he’s been awake for…” He looked at Amell. “A week?”

“Close to two.” Amell grimaced, looking a bit tired himself.

“Jesus Christ.” Gregory rubbed his eyes, imagining how they’d sting. “Can anyone be up for that long?”

“His skill probably forces him too.” Thanatos didn’t look happy.

Gregory weighed his words. “These people aren’t seers.”

“No, but they have psychic abilities.” Thanatos gave him a narrow-eyed look, and Gregory glanced at Rufus for support, but he was busy mumbling something too low for Gregory to hear to Jaki.

“They’re dangerous.”

“Only if they use their skills on us. They won’t if we rescue them. Arawn is in danger, Gregory.”

Gregory looked away from Thanatos. He didn’t want them here. “Either way, we need to get rid of the tracker.”

Silence descended and stretched uncomfortably.

After an eternity, Alaric cleared his throat. “So, we dump it somewhere, keep watch, and follow?”

Gregory was about to suggest only dumping it when Rufus spoke. “Yes, we follow.”

“Rufus.”

“They don’t have to live here.” Rufus met his gaze. “I’m not thrilled about having them living here either, but we can’t leave them.”

“Why not?”

Rufus huffed in irritation and gestured around the table. “Same way we couldn’t leave these idiots behind.”

“Why thank you, Rufus. Warms my heart.” Sarcasm was dripping from Minerva’s words, and Rufus grinned at her.

“So let the wolves have them. We have a house full of psychics already.”

“You’re such a dick, Gregory.” Thanatos slapped his shoulder. Gregory was shocked, not because it hurt—it didn’t—but because Thanatos had never slapped him before. Not this way at least. He had done it in a fit of panic more than once.

“Don’t you think they’d want to be around other psychics? We knew nothing about the world—”

“This is not the same. You were locked up your entire lives, these people are out there in society. They’re using their skills to control people, walking around among them. They’re not like you.”

“It doesn’t mean they have a choice!”

Gregory snapped his mouth shut before he said something he couldn’t take back. “Fine! We’ll rescue them, but I will not—”

“Thank you.” Thanatos kissed his cheek, and Gregory groaned.

Alaric grinned, a predatory gleam taking over his eyes. “Decided. We bring the tracker back onto our land and take turns watching.” He moved to stand, then hesitated. “Rufus and I take the first shift.”

“Why?” Gregory always worked with Rufus.

“Amell needs a few hours’ sleep, and I think it’s better if we pair up vamp and shifter to get the most out of our abilities.”

“Fine.”

They spoke some more. Amell and Alaric agreed on a place to put the tracker and for Alaric to call Amell when it was time for a shift change. Minerva then showed Amell to an available room in the castle, and Amell said he’d come knock on Gregory’s door when it was time to get up.
