“Probably not.” He kissed his shoulder again. “Are you okay? For real, not because you think it’s what I want to hear.”

“I’m okay.” He turned and gave Gregory a kiss at an awkward angle.

Chapter 19

Thanatos jerked awake to someone hovering over him and screamed. His arms shot out to push the person away. He hadn’t woken from a nightmare, instead he’d woken up in one.

“Honey.”

He didn’t listen.

“Babe.” The form descended on him, but where Thanatos prepared for pain, strong arms wrapped around him, and hot breath ghosted over his ear. “Are you awake?”

Thanatos stilled. “Gregory?”

“Yeah. Sorry I scared you. I forgot you can’t see in the dark.” He kissed Thanatos right below the ear, making him shiver. “It’s time to go. Alaric called Amell a couple of minutes ago. We’ll get something quick to eat, then we’re out of here.”

Cold fear filled Thanatos to the core, and Gregory tightened his hold. “We’ll be fine. You want this, remember?”

He did, and he didn’t. He didn’t want to put Gregory or any of the others in danger, but he couldn’t leave the psychics, couldn’t allow the superintendent to move them. If their group was anything like the house of horrors, Arawn was in danger. And if he was looking at it objectively, he could see how he didn’t fit in the group. The others could be hired out, and do a job with a clear result, but ghosts? No one could see ghosts.

“Let me make you breakfast.” He pushed at Gregory to be let up, but he didn’t budge.

“We’re able to feed ourselves.”

“I want to do it.” And there was no way he would be able to remain in bed when knowing Gregory was out there. He should come. “I should go with you.”

“No.”

“I know how they think. I could help.”

“No. You might know how the warden would have acted, but this is a new person. It’s a different kind of group.”

Desperation clawed at him. He couldn’t allow Gregory to go out there alone. “But they’d feel better if they could talk to a psychic when they’re freed.”

Gregory made a sound, one of disagreement. “No. First, we’re not going to free them now, we’re watching the place we’ve left the tracker in. Second, you’re too slow, too frail, and you don’t have the senses we do.”

“Fuck you.” Anger and shame mingled in his chest, mostly anger, but Gregory made it sound as if he was some useless, weak being.

“Honey. We all have different skills. This is what we’re good at, so let us do it. You’ll know if and when someone comes for Himeros.”

The anger didn’t lessen much, but he pushed at Gregory to be let up. “I’ll make breakfast.” He looked around in the darkness. Where the fuck were his clothes?

A small lamp clicked on by the bed, and Gregory watched him with an impassive look. Thanatos glared at him and found his underwear thrown on the floor. He shook them out and put them on. Then he grabbed his jeans from where he’d put them the night before. When he couldn’t see his T-shirt anywhere, he stomped over to Gregory’s closet and grabbed one there.

The smile playing on Gregory’s lips didn’t make him feel any better, so he glared again. Gregory chuckled, then he was behind Thanatos before he could see him move. Arms wrapped around him as he nuzzled his neck. “Not a morning person?”

Thanatos grumbled, and Gregory laughed. He tried not to react to the light kisses scattered over his neck, but it was impossible to halt the shiver. “It’ll be fine. Most likely nothing will happen at all.”

“So I could come.”

Gregory tightened his hold. “No.”

“Ass.”

“Mmm.” He kissed Thanatos’ neck again. “But you knew that about me already.”

With a huff, he turned in Gregory’s embrace and wrapped his arms around his neck. Melting against him, he closed his eyes and tried to forget everything about facilities and guards and superintendents.
