We ate in mostly silence, but she did compliment the food.

“Abra’s roommate brought it over a bit ago. It’s quite good.”

“That lesbian? I guess she can cook well enough.”

I wasn’t sure what to say, so I just remained quiet.

She watched me while she ate. I remembered her medicine and thought I’d need to get her out of the kitchen before I pulled it out of the hiding place. When she finished, I took her plate from her and waited until she was out of the kitchen before searching the breadbox for the pill tray. I found it and was turning around to bring them to her when she startled me. She was watching me from the doorway. She smiled, but then she got serious.

“I wondered where they had hidden those. I’m perfectly capable of taking my medication, but they insist on treating me like a baby.” She shuffled over to me and took the pills from my hand. She got herself a glass of water and downed them. She set the glass down on the counter, glared at me, and then shuffled back to the front room.

How unfortunate. Afraid she might do something with them, I moved the pill tray to the cabinet over the refrigerator. I figured none of the women would be tall enough to reach, but I’d be here in the morning.

I texted Abra that I’d fed her mother and given her meds to her. I asked how her gran was.

She’s tired and sore. She looks so frail. Visiting hours are over at 10. Be home then. Thanks, babe.

She really didn’t need to thank me. I’d do this and a whole lot more if it made her life easier.

Be safe. I love you.-

Okay, it might be weird to send her that after what had happened this morning, but I didn’t care. I needed her to know.
