Ben’s eyes close as he leans into me, and for several heartbeats, we stand in silence. “Tell me what we should do,” he whispers, close enough to kiss me. “You make the call.”

“Me?”

“We’re in this together, aren’t we?” He brushes his lips over mine, giving and taking the strength we’re both so desperate to find.

Dad and Cooper wouldn’t dream of taking me on any sort of mission, let alone letting me lead one. I’m taken back by the stark difference in Ben and Cooper. At one point, I thought Ben wasn’t much different than any of the other males in my life who try to control me.

I shudder. Ben is only controlling in the bedroom, and even then, he lets me have my own fun.

Determination ignites low in my gut. “I’m going to convince the Wolves to work with us.”

Dad has made his feelings about Ben clear, and convincing the rest of the club isn’t going to be easy, but at this point, what other choice do we have?

Ben makes me laugh when his eyes roll. “That’s going to go over well.”

I snatch the keys out of his hand and shove him. “Get in the truck.”

He locks a hand around my wrist to keep from stumbling backward as a growl vibrates through him. “If we had the time, I’d make you pay for that.”

I grab his jaw and bring his mouth to mine for a hot, demanding kiss. “I’ll be waiting for the follow through.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-THREE

Irelease Ben’s hand just before we walk into the clubhouse. “Will you relax?”

“I’m fine.”

Sure, I think to myself while watching a muscle jump along his jaw.

“Just follow my lead. Don’t engage if one of them directly challenges you, and make no sudden movements.”

“Is this a meeting or a fucking zoo?”

I scuff the toe of my boot against his. “Better. A den of wolves.”

With a wink, I push the door open, and we stride through the same building Dad’s office is in until we hit the spot where we conduct our usual business.

Ben stands tall beside me, crossing his arms and glaring at the men seated in a semicircle at a long twelve-seat table directly in front of us.

“Haze.” Cooper stands and acknowledges me.

I can feel the heat radiating off Ben as he takes a small step in front of me. Whether he realizes what he’s done or not, it’s a power play—one that our vice president doesn’t appreciate.

Dad carefully studies Ben with his elbows resting on the table and hands clasped in front of his mouth.

“What did I just tell you?” I hiss.

“Enforcer,” Coop says by way of greeting.

“Wolf,” he retorts.

Dear God. The two of them are going to put me in an early grave.

Lucas, Teresa, and three other pack members glare at Ben—our enemy turned ally.

“I’ll assume you were successful in persuading him,” Cooper says.
