“I don’t know what to feel right now.”He said that he was in the same boat.Glad it was over with so far, and upset at how easily it went down.“They’ve not caught Shawn yet, so we don’t want that to jinx that for the police.”The knock at the door startled them both.
Guy turned his back to the door and looked at her.“Don’t move. Not even if it looks like things are going well.”She nodded.“Stay behind me and don’t move.I can’t stand the fact that I might lose you…it’s your brother, and while I can’t smell the gun on him, he’s been someplace where someone or him fired one. Also, I’ve called in my brothers. They’re on their way here now.”
“All right.”She moved back from the door and Guy in the event he needed to shift. While she’d never seen his wolf, she had heard that he was bigger than a normal-sized wolf and more dangerous.“Be careful and stay safe.”
“I promise I will be better at taking him on if I don’t have to worry about you.”He opened the door and asked her brother what he wanted.Shawn asked if she was here.
“She’s here.I’m sure you saw her coming home just now.I believe that she’s in the kitchen.”Amber backed away from the wall and slipped into the closet. She didn’t know what her brother would do right now, but she didn’t want to be in the way if he had to be killed. And that, she thought, was what she was hoping for.“What can I do for you?”
“Your brother fired me.”He asked him what he’d done.“Why do you think that I did anything wrong?Maybe he’s the one that fucked up by firing me.I was doing a good job there.”
“No, you weren’t.You were sleeping on the job when he found you.”He asked him where he’d heard that from.“My brother. He said that it wasn’t the first time that you’ve been caught sleeping on the job, either.”
“It was a shitty job anyway.Who wants to smell like meat all the time?Where’s my sister, Amber?Don’t think I didn’t notice that you didn’t tell me where she was.”He said he’d told him she was in the kitchen.“Well, I want to talk to her about this.We have more bills coming in all the time, and they’re not getting paid.I don’t have a job anymore, so Amber is going to have to fork over some more money soon, or we’ll be out of everything.”
“I’m thinking that you should have thought of that when you were sleeping on the job.Bills are out there for everyone. And they need to be paid.Having a job and keeping one is the only way that they’re going to get paid.”He said that Amber needed to help them again.“I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Just as she was snuggling herself back more in the closet, she heard Guy laugh as he asked Shawn what he was going to do with the gun he had. That scared her, but she stayed where she was. There was no point in her getting hurt when she had a wolf to take care of her.
“I told you that I want to speak to my sister, Amber. You’re to bring her to me right now.”Guy told him no and said that she was safe where she was.“Well, that’s not going to work for me right now.I know that they arrested Margaret. Why the hell is Amber staying around here instead of at the house that she got from her mom?Margaret’s been watching for her, but that doctor keeps finding her and bringing her back.”
That scared her more than just the gun being pointed at Guy.They’d been stalking her.Not only that, but she’d bet anything that Margaret would have killed her given the chance.Staying where she was, she was nervous for Guy.If Shawn had a gun, then that meant that he was pointing it directly at her mate. When the gun went off, she felt a tightness in the air around her and then nothing.
“Don’t come out here.”She said she wouldn’t, then asked if he was dead.“He is.There is no point in you seeing this. Also, I’ve been shot.In the left shoulder.”
“Let me come out and see you.Better yet, you come to me.”He said that he was his wolf so that when he shifted back, he’d be healed. She was better off where she was for the police.“All right, but I don’tlike it.”
“Neither do I that I had to kill him.My brothers are here.Ivan said that it’s a clean shot in and out. Also, Devlin is here in the event I get arrested.I might. But we’ll have to wait on the police to see. They’re just pulling into the driveway now.”She felt stupid being in the closet, but figured that he was right; she was better off there than fussing at Guy.When she heard the sirens, she felt marginally better.“I love you, Guy.”
“And I love you.Not too much longer now, and we’ll be able to be at home safe again.”She liked that idea.Being safe anywhere was a good thing.

They did arrest him, which he figured they would.Amber was finally able to come out of the closet, for which he was grateful for.She could see him now, and she did fuss, but he loved it.It was nice being pampered again, but by her this time instead of the children. As he was being pulled away, he asked about Margaret.
“Her doctor came and got her.We have the gun. They must have each had one, and we’re going to be running tests on them to see if either one of them killed their father. The video was cleaned up about the murder of Belinda Gross, and I’d never have believed it if I didn’t see it with my own eyes.Them kids, they were just kids, too, killed her where she was standing like she was nothing more than a bubble they were popping in the air.”Apt description, he thought, since they had bashed her skull in.“We’re going out to the house to do a search and to arrest Margaret.Glad to have these two cases off the books, I tell you what.”
“I bet you are.”Guy was put in a cell but was told he’d not be there too long. They knew it was justified for him to kill Shawn.“When my wife gets here, will you allow her to come back and see me, John? This has been kinda hard on her, knowing that her family killed her dad and stepmom.”
“She’ll be able to if I have to bring her back myself.”He felt better about that and was soon told that she and his attorney were there.Devlin told him not to say anything when he left, and the police seemed to understand that.None of them had asked him a single question about the way things went down.“You write me up something when your brother gets here, can’t you, Guy?For our own records.”
“Whatever Devlin says. You know I always trust him.”John told him that it was good to have an attorney around all the time and left him to his cell.As soon as he saw Amber, her crying about how she didn’t like this at all, Guy told her how much he loved her.She seemed to calm down a bit when she saw that his shoulder was completely healed and he wasn’t covered in blood.Yes, he thought, he could get used to this pampering a bit more.
When Devlin okayed for him to write out a statement, he was told not to tell anyone that he shifted to take care of himself.Everyone would understand, no doubt, but if someone who didn’t know what was going on got hold of the paperwork, they’d not understand. The next thing he was told was that Margaret was dead as well.Killed by police.
“We were set to arrest her when she pulled out another gun. They must have gotten a discount on them, that’s all I can figure out.Well, she pulled it out and shot her doctor. Then the nurse who was set to work with him. When she fired into my men, they opened fire on her and killed her right off.Thing is, she kept asking where her brother was, and we’d told her right off that he was dead.”Guy did tell them that she had trouble with simple things and wouldn’t listen to things that she didn’t want to hear.“That sounds about right. She was fixated on the fact that he’d not been with us when we came to pick her up.This one is for the books, I tell you what.”
After writing his statement out and letting his brother read it over, he was set free to leave.John, of course, told him not to leave town, and he said that he’d not.Not that they’d care if he went to Columbus so long as he promised them he’d come back home. That’s the sort of thing you got in small towns, trust.
He was suddenly exhausted when he returned home.Dozing on the couch with Amber, he told her in bits and pieces how his book was going. It wasn’t until he got up to get himself something to snack on that he noticed that Belinda was gone.Calling out for her brought her to him, but she lookedoddly ghostlike more than before.
“I’m moving on.I just wanted to make sure that Amber got her money and my death was solved.”He told her that he was going to miss her.“And I’ll miss you too, you big lug.”
She looked around the room they were in, then she stared at him.Telling him to take care of Amber while he was still on this earthly plane.Guy promised that he would for the rest of his life and that he’d name his first daughter after her.
“Don’t do that.Belinda isn’t a name that I ever liked.”He said that he did and that if Amber was willing, they’d be having them a little Belinda in the house chasing after ghosts if she wanted.“All right, that’ll be nice.Maybe her grandpa and I will come to visit her when you least expect it.That’ll be nice, won’t it?For us to come around to see the little girl.If you have one?”
“You bet it would.”He said he wished that he could hug her.“I was never much into hugs until I met your Amber; now it’s all I can do not to hug everyone I come across.”
