Fuck.I was lost. I needed her. I lowered my head, glad that she’d included me in her life. For that, I’d let her cat live with us.

As I neared her, she closed the pet carrier like she’d won a battle and jumped up. I stepped back so she wouldn’t hit me, and she snapped her fingers. “I have an extra pan in the bedroom.”

Right. Get cat, go home, and then figure out what turns her on.The kiss earlier meant I’d done it once in public already, so now we would see what happened when we were alone. She handed me the bag with the cat’s food.

As we headed out, I said, “This is more than I expected.”

She held up the carrier. “If you can’t handle a defenseless cat, how are you planning on having a baby?”

I’d only pushed her buttons to see if she would show up for our wedding. I wasn’t ready for a baby. I’d wanted Carrie, but I hadn’t exactly been nice to her. She’d married me because she was loyal to her family, not because she loved me. I’d needed to see that, and I’d refused to transform into a softie and ask her nicely like I’d half been inclined to do. She’d never believe I wanted to marry her because she’d been the only one for me, always.

I opened the door for her, and she settled the cat behind her as I said, “I’ll have you to help me figure it out.”

She stood and shook her head like she was disappointed in me. “Demanding a baby meant you’d thought about it.”

“I like sex, and you’d want more than just a night.”

“We’ve already had sex, once, and that was just for fun. Babies are serious.”

“Children can wait.”

“But not sex.”

“I’m not horrible.” I thought about pushing the driver’s seat back. I was already too big for my car, and the three of us would hardly fit. Then I winked at her and told her the truth. “Carrie, I’d have said anything to get into your pants.”

I pulled out of the spot and drove fast. She clutched her chair like she was half afraid of speed.

“Yeah, I wanted to throw my water in your face.”

I shrugged. As soon we were alone, I’d show her how nice I could be, but for the moment, I said, “Shows me I still get under your skin.”

She glanced at the top of the car. “You make no sense. I have no idea why I even fell for your charms the first time.”

The memory of being at that party of my brother’s and her pointing me to a bedroom replayed in vivid color. “You started it.”

Her face reddened. “I…”

We drove in silence. I broke it when I said, “If my memory serves me right, I didn’t argue.”

She lifted her chin. “Times have changed since then.”

We drove for a few more minutes, and then I said, “You were the only woman I’d ever wanted to see every day of my life, and I wish I’d been smarter sooner.”

“You were my hero once.”

“I’m not a hero.” I took her hand and squeezed it. I needed to be between her thighs soon. “You were the sweetest woman in my life. It’s hard to imagine you’re chasing crime.”

Carrie sighed and didn’t pull away. “I enjoy working the crime desk.”

We made it to my house, and I parked in my garage. “I don’t know about everyone, but I run my own law office, and no one in my family had better expect the family discount because they’ve done something stupid like get involved in crime.”

She grabbed her laptop, in addition to the cat, and hopped out without waiting for me. “You don’t offer a discount?”

I took the rest of her necessities and walked with her to my side door. “Oh, I’d do it for free, but I’d be angry.”

I unlocked the door, and this time, it was like we were truly newlyweds. If she hadn’t been carrying that cat, I’d have picked her up. She headed in first and said, “I never expected you to be a lawyer.” Then she went down on her knees and opened the carrier.

I put the rest of her stuff on my counters. “I figured it was better to stay abreast of all the possibilities, and the degree fit my quest.”
