“We already know each other.”

“It’s been five years. A lot has changed.”

“Why?”

“Why not? It’s just one friendly non-date… and giving you that serenade when you know I hate singing is worth one little favor, right?”

I had to be crazy to agree to this.

“No touching. At all.”

He held up his hands. “I will be a true gentleman, a Boy Scout.”

“AndI drive myself and meet you.”

“Fair enough.” He tilted his head. “Any other conditions?”

“No funny stuff. Strictly platonic.”

“Deal.” That mouth of his that I had kissed so many times lifted upwards. “How’s Saturday morning around ten?”

“I’m working on Saturday, but I have Sunday off.”

“Sunday it is, but it will have to wait until after church. My mother would have my hide if I skipped that.”

“Does she know you were serenading me this morning?”

He pursed his lips. “She doesn’t need to know. It’s not like we’re dating.”

“We definitely aren’t.”

“I know.”

I stood up. “Your thirty minutes are up, and you best get going before my grandmother comes home.”

He winced. “She still got that old BB gun?”

“Yup, and she’s not afraid to use it.”

He got up, rubbing his left butt cheek. “And I still have the scar to prove it.”

I laughed. “Go on and get that butt of yours to work before your father has a fit.”

“Sunday at two o’clock?”

“Fine,” I said.

Austin took off toward the gate leading to the driveway, and I went back inside.

Lucas shut his laptop. “You’re not inviting your friend inside?”

I opened the fridge and grabbed the Britta container and a glass from the cabinet. “He’s not my friend. He’s my ex-…whateverhe was.”

“Ex-whatever?”

I poured the water and took a long sip. “It’s complicated.”

The last thing I wanted to do was talk about my love life or lack thereof with Lucas Freeman.
