“Thanks.”

“No problem.” I started off towards my room.

“Hey, if you’re not tired, I was thinking of having a drink out on the patio.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “You’re welcome to join me.”

Part of me wanted to, but my aunt’s warning hung like a gigantic cloud over my head. He’s a Freeman, and I’m a Reed. Cedar Gardens may very well give birth to magical summers. But all summers end eventually.

“I’m gonna head in for the night.”

He leaned against the wall. “I’m getting the sense that’s something is bothering you.”

I shrugged. “Nope. Just tired is all.”

“It has nothing to do with that kiss from earlier?”

Boy, he didn’t mince words. Like at all.

Avoiding his eyes, I ran my hand along the door frame. “It’s just a kid’s game. I know it didn’t mean anything.”

Lucas didn’t say anything at first, and when I glanced up, he looked as if I had just slapped him across the face. “I understand. Goodnight.” He walked back to his room and closed the door.
