Lucas leaned against the opened window, his hand waving in the wind as we drove. He hadn’t said anything as I took the backroads and scenic routes.
After a little while, I turned down the music to talk to him. “Enjoying the ride?”
He brought his hand in and leaned against the car seat. “I am.”
“You pick the next turn.”
He straightened up in his seat. “I don’t know where I am.”
I shrugged. “So? What does your gut tell you?”
“I’m all for guts, but in the matter of directions, people have starved and died getting lost.”
“Okay, then we keep driving straight until you choose.”
“Straight is good. At least we’ll be able to find our way back.”
“Do you even know where this road leads?” I asked.
He sat up straighter, more alert. “Where does it lead?”
“It could lead us into another state. Or it could take us right off a cliff.”
“Funny.”
