The interview is scheduled for three P.M. Liam said something about letting the kids eat lunch and then have their nap, and it’s only now going on one. I have two hours to kill and no idea what to do. I clean up the kitchen and then sit behind my desk, looking over my finances. My bank balance is getting smaller and smaller by the day, and I still have bills to pay if I stay in this apartment another month. After I pay water, electricity, and rent, I’ll have nothing left. The sooner I can get out, the better.

My savings account is completely empty thanks to last month’s groceries and gas. I have nothing left to fall back on except my credit cards, and I really don’t want to go into debt. I’m about to look for change under my couch cushions. I could always ask my parents for a loan, but I’d like to avoid that, if at all possible. I sigh as I look at the number on the page, praying for a miracle.

Unable to sit any longer, I grab my purse and keys and head out. I drive over to the coffee shop and find Kinsley behind the counter.

“Hey, look at you, hot stuff,” she jokes with a wide smile as her eyes light up.

I wave her off. “I was bored and couldn’t keep sitting. You got something for me to do?”

“Well, you could run a couple of coffees across the street to the library for me.”

“Sure, hand ’em over.”

She fixes up the coffee and pushes them toward me. “Their total is twelve-fifty.”

“Got it,” I say, walking out with two cups of coffee. I cross the street and enter the library. There are two older women sitting behind the desk.

“Here’s your coffee order. That’ll be twelve-fifty.”

“Thank you, honey. Here you go. Keep the change,” she says, sliding over a twenty.

“Thank you,” I say as I take the cash back to the coffee shop. When I walk in, I hand it over and Kinsley rings it up. Then she hands me the change. “It’s your tip.”

“Really? Man, I should work here more often.”

“Shh, you can’t call it work or I’ll have to pay you.”

I laugh. “Volunteer, is that better?”

“Much,” she agrees, nodding her head.

With my tip money, I purchase a latte and sit at my usual table by the window. Kinsley comes and sits across from me.

“It’s so slow today. Makes the day take forever,” she complains.

“Why haven’t I seen Travis in here lately? You guys were going hot and heavy for a while.”

She rolls her eyes. “Not anymore. He’s moving to pursue his dreams of becoming a famous actor.”

“I take it you don’t think he has what it takes.”

“I just think it’s silly, you know? I mean California is crawling with failed actors who end up as waiters. Why pack up your whole life and risk it all on a move like that?”

“He is pretty cute though. Maybe he’ll make it.”

She snorts. “Yeah, and maybe I’ll luck out and marry a millionaire while he’s gone.”

“Hey, you never know. You heard about the party planner here in town who ended up with that big hotel owner, right?”

“Yes, I’m so jealous.”

I laugh. “Same. Why can’t I get that lucky?”

“I don’t know, but I think we’re overdue for a girl’s night.”

I nod in agreement. “Yeah, we should really plan one of those soon.”

“I’ll make the next schedule and have Tracy come in one Sunday morning to give me plenty of time to recover.”
