“Smart. There’s nothing worse than having to go to work with a hangover.”
She laughs. “No, there’s not.”
I spend an hour delivering coffee and end up making almost twenty bucks in tips. I slip the cash into my purse, thankful for the added gas money. “Well, I guess I better head to my interview.”
“Good luck. You got this,” she tells me with a confident voice.
Me, I’m not so sure.
Chapter Four
LIAM
Ihang up the phone and lean back, thinking over this whole nanny business. I really don’t like the thought of having a stranger in my house. I’m concerned with bringing another woman into the kids’ lives who might not remain a constant for them. Since his mom left, Xander has a hard time accepting new people. It takes him a long time to warm up, and I want to make sure he’s as comfortable as he can be in his own home. On the other hand, something’s got to give. I can’t be what the kids need and keep my work on track. A nanny is the best option.
I call the kids over and mute the TV. “Do you guys know what a nanny is?”
Maddy shakes her head.
“That’s what Nana is always saying we need, right?” Xander responds.
I laugh. “Right. A nanny is someone who I will pay to come in here and take care of you guys. She’ll take you to and from school, cook your meals, help you get ready for bed, that sort of thing.”
“Why? Where are you going?” he asks.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be here, buddy, but I also have a lot of work to do. I can’t get my work done if I’m spending all day playing with you guys. You understand, right?”
He nods.
“I’m going to hire a nanny and she’s going to be here soon so we can meet her. If you don’t like her, I won’t hire her, but I want you to remember to give her a fair shot. Don’t just say you don’t like her because you want me cooking your breakfast. Got it?”
He nods, and Maddy is already running off to resume playing.
“Are you ready for some lunch?”
Xander nods again, and I get up to go fix them something to eat. I make them both a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, pour some chips onto their plates, then add some animal crackers for dessert. I pour them both a glass of milk and call them into the kitchen to eat.
“After we eat, we’re going to clean the living room up for the nanny, then we’ll take a nap and when we wake up, we’ll meet her. Okay?”
Xander nods. Maddy is too busy playing with her animal crackers to notice much else.
As promised, after they eat, we go into the living room and clean up their toys before I take them up to bed for a nap. Maddy falls asleep almost instantly. She always does after she fills her belly. Xander is out of the nap stage, but he lays down and tries anyway. I close both their doors and go into the office to get some work done while they sleep.
An hour and a half later, both the kids are up and we’re going back downstairs for some juice and another snack. I turn the TV on and they both sit in front of it with their drink and cookies while I mentally make a list of questions to ask the nanny.
The doorbell rings, and I stand to answer it. Pulling the door open I find a beautiful, young lady on the other side. She smiles bright and holds out her hand to shake. “I’m Sasha.”
I shake her hand. “I’m Liam. It’s nice to meet you. Please, come in.” I hold the door open for her and shut it behind us. I quickly glance over her, taking in her tight body. She’s shaped like a dancer or athlete of some kind. She’s tall, nearly as tall as I am, and she’s thin. Doesn’t have much as far as curves go, but she has delicate features that make her breathtaking, such as her plump lips, her dark eyes lined in thick, dark lashes, and her long, auburn hair that lays in soft curls down her back.
I show her into the living room where we both have a seat on the sectional couch.
“Guys, come meet Sasha,” I tell the kids.
Xander gets up and he comes to stand in front of her. He holds out his hand and she smiles before shaking it.
“What’s your name?” she asks.
“Xander,” he answers quietly.
