Without looking at Dyami, I spoke. “Not sure who these folks are, but make sure you tell them to stand down.” I lifted my gun to show him what I was working with. “This switch right here is not what they want. This is my no-shift-needed baby.”
I moved toward the cars. An older man stepped out of the passenger seat of the first car that was driven by a woman. The man resembled Dyami, so I assumed it was his father.I wonder if he is as much of a bitch as his son.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Pops, Ma Mary, and Elodie come down the steps. In the second SUV, two men and a woman got out. I changed my course to move toward my family. I stood next to Pops as the older woman and man approached with the other three men on their heels.
“Chogan, what’s the meaning of all of this?” the older man asked. “I have never known you to have issues with our pack.”
His tone was harder than I preferred.
“Chief Ahiga, I hold the same sentiments, which is why I am surprised that your son came here today with the goal to disrespect my daughter’s mate. Let me ask you this. What would you do to protect your mate?”
Pops’s eyes looked toward the woman that stood next to the chief.
Like it was the first time that the chief realized I was there, he glared at me. He sized me up for a beat before he spoke.
“Are you the horse beast?”
“Respectfully, it doesn’t matter what I am. What matters is that Elodie is my mate, and your son thought it was alright to come here and disrespect our union. I tried to warn him about his disrespect yesterday, but he seems to be a little stupid.”
When the woman whom I assumed was the Chief’s mate asked if my gun was necessary, I tittered.
“I don’t know y’all, and based on the actions of your son, I don’t trust y’all.”
All of our eyes shifted to the right of us where the two naked females held up a naked Dyami as they walked toward us. The chief’s wife told the woman to get the robes out of the car. The girl rushed off. We all stood there in silence and waited. It didn’t take long for the girl to get back, hand the robes to the three naked idiots, and for them to cover themselves. Someone must have asked where the other person that came with them wasbecause everyone’s head snapped in the direction where he lay lifeless.
“You killed Chunta!” one of the men roared in my direction. I wasn’t sure why it was assumed that I killed his ass.
Pops put his hand up. “My son did no such thing. I killed him because he attacked my mate.” There was a short pause. “I will not apologize for protecting my mate.”
Chief Ahiga turned toward his son. “What is the meaning of this, Dyami? I am trying to understand what could be so detrimental that you come here to disturb the harmony on this land.”
He cowered under the words of his father. That was interesting to me.
“Father, I . . . I came over here to speak to Elodie. Yes, I knew she had a mate, but he is not worthy. He is a horse beast!”
When Elodie stepped toward Dyami, so did I. I wrapped my arm around her from behind and pulled her to my chest. She didn’t need to be near him to talk to him. It was times like this that I did wish I had the ability to mind speak with her. Her eyes lifted to meet mine. They said the words that my mouth wanted to.
She nodded before she looked back at Dyami. “See, there is this funny concept called minding your damn business, Dyami. When you saw me in the hospital and I introduced you to my mate, your head at that point should have said, ‘Do my job and go the hell home.’ The only reason that you came to know about my mate’s beast was because he had to protect me. He is not a danger to anyone who is not a danger to him.” She paused for a second before she chuckled softly. “While you’re worried about me, your mate looks like she wants to throw herself off a cliff from you embarrassing her.”
“She is not my mate,” Dyami said sternly. From the look on just about everyone in their party’s faces, it looked like that was a surprise to them. Daphne got no respect.
Daphne moved her body that held him up from under his arm.
“Dyami, how can you say that when I have your son? Our son is six months old.”
“Daphne, having a child with someone does not make you their mate. I told you that when we started messing around, when you told me you were pregnant, and when you had the baby. I have no interest in mating with you,” he said with no concern for her feelings.
“The baby?” his mother asked. “Is that how you speak of your son? You’ve come over here with disrespect and involved the pack. Now Chunta is dead because of your mindlessness.” Tears cascaded down her cheeks. “Elodie is mated. It’s over!”
Chief Ahiga’s head fell before he looked at his son with a look of either shame or sympathy. I wasn’t sure which one, but Pops probably knew.
“Chogan, my deepest apologies for my son’s disrespect.” His sight focused on me. “I have heard of your kind in a pack in Washington. Do you belong with that pack?”
“They are my cousins. No, I belong to a pack on the Southeast Coast,” I responded. “My mate and I are here to check on our parents.”
He gave a faint smile. “Very well. From what I have been told, your kind is of no threat to our kind, and we will not be a threat to yours. Elodie, my son will not bother you again.”
The chief began to give out instructions regarding Chunta’s body. I felt sort of bad that someone lost their life over bullshit. I hoped they reevaluated Dyami’s placement as the pack leader. He put his pack in danger for his own selfish purpose, and that wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
