“The FBI know now too, so don’t feel too special.”
“Yeah, but you chose to tell me. So I feel incredibly special.”
As I lift her hand to my lips, I can’t help but grin like an idiot. It has been less than four months since the day I ran into Isla Adams. I’ve collectively spent six hours in her physical presence. There is no logical reason for me to trust her, and yet she has completely infiltrated my life and changed me for the better.
Her soft fingers find my cheek, and it takes all my concentration to focus on the road in front of me. “I’ve missed this dimple,” she says on a sigh. “I’ve missedyou.”
Thank goodness we’re nearly to my apartment because I am ready to kiss this woman senseless.
When I finally park outside my building, Isla starts putting her leg back on, but I hurry around to her door and stop her. “No time,” I growl, lifting her into my arms and heading for the stairs.
“But my luggage!” she says, laughing.
“We’ll get it later.”
I have some lost time to make up for.

Isla
“I never want to leave this spot.” I close my eyes, focusing on the lazy circles Jake draws on my arm. Though this is the most comfortable I’ve ever been, snuggled up together on his couch, I refuse to let myself fall asleep. The flights back to the States were brutal, but I’m hoping jetlag keeps me on Jake’s same schedule while I’m here so we don’t lose any time.
I still can’t believe the man started working nights so he could be awake the same time I was.
Jake presses a kiss to the top of my head. We’ve spent the last couple of hours kissing like there’s no tomorrow, but there’s something about this gentle touch of his lips that feels like it’s so much bigger than anything we’ve done before. “You could stay, you know.”
His words bring a warmth to my belly that feels like something I want to cling to forever. But I can’t. “You know I need to go back to Colorado.”
“I know.”
We’ve talked a lot about my family, how things used to be strained between my parents and me and have only recently gotten to a good place. It was hard enough to leave my family for a few months. Especially Kailani. “But I’ll come visit whenever I can. I’ll need to come work with Emily sometimes anyway, and it’s only a couple of hours away.”
Jake wraps his arms around me and squeezes tight, like he’s afraid I might run away as he says, “I have another idea.”
He sounds so nervous that I can’t help but smile, wishing I could see his face but unwilling to move from this spot until I have to. “I love ideas.”
“What if I move to Diamond Springs?”
I sit up, spinning to face him. “What?”
He gives me a sheepish smile. “My company is almost fully remote now anyway, and as long as I tell the FBI where I’m going, I don’t see why it would cause any problems if I made a change of residence. Hadley’s trial will be happening soon, and hopefully after he and his associates are officially behind bars, I won’t be a point of interest anymore. I can start living a normal life again.”
Oh, he has no idea how much I love what he’s saying right now, but I’m trying not to freak out until it’s a sure thing. “What about Fischer?”
He chuckles. “Fischer will be fine. Micah will take care of him.”
“How do you know? He still hasn’t replied to—”
The front door suddenly flies open, bringing a tall, dark, and handsome man into the front room, though he doesn’t stop to chat. He heads straight down the hall to the bedrooms, shutting a door behind him.
I turn to Jake with wide eyes, glad to see him grinning. “Was that…?”
He nods. “That was Fischer. I have a feeling he’s late for dinner.”
“He’d better be! Otherwise he’s going to mess up the best thing to ever happen to him. Micah is perfect for him.”
“Like you’re perfect for me?” Jake grabs both my hands and pulls me closer, brushing his nose against mine despite the sound of a shower turning on down the hall, reminding me we’re no longer alone. “Isla, I have never loved anyone like I love you, and I would move heaven and earth to be with you. Moving a couple of hours away is nothing if it means I get to be yours. At least think about it?”
