Lily snapped her head around with an angry snarl at the sound of that voice and eyed Doctor Hillary as the detective cuffed the woman’s hands behind her back. How dare that woman even speak to her? She’d trusted her. They’d all trusted her… a murderer that used them to find her victims.

Doctor Hillary seemed completely unaffected by the events that were unfolding. That chilling smile still affixed to her face as she said, “The damage these men cause,” she paused, nodding toward Christian, “What they do goes beyond bruises on the flesh – the scars.” She jutted her chin toward Lily’s face. “They damage the soul. They deserve to be punished.”

Detective Sanford gave the cuffs a jerk, “Not by you.”

Lily turned away, unable to stomach the sight of the woman, and focused once again on Christian. Laying her head against his chest, she focused on the agonizingly slow beat of his heart as hot tears blinded her. “I used to dream of killing my mate, Christian. I wished for him to die almost every single day.” A sob broke free and then a keening cry. “But not you. Please, not you. Please stay with me, Christian.” Another sob, “Please. I love you. I love you so much. You can’t leave me.”

Feeling weak fingers tunnel into her hair, Lily jerked her head up to see that Christian’s eyes were open though glazed with pain. He opened his mouth like he was trying to tell her something, but the words wouldn’t come.

“Ma’am, I need you to move.”

Lily snarled when someone tried to remove her hands from Christian’s wound, and when arms came around her from behind to pull her away, she fought the hold, heels kicking back against shins as she was lifted away, and the back of her head connected with a hard chin. “Ouch! Dammit, woman! We’re trying to save him.”

She recognized Tim, the town paramedic, quickly moving into her spot to set to work on Christian and calmed slightly. Turning her head, she saw that it was the other detective that she’d just abused and the area was now swarming with police as well as pack.

Tarvahl and Sherry Pierce moved in to extract her from the male detective’s arms, both of them murmuring encouragement, telling her how strong Christian was, trying to give her hope without making promises. But Lily knew, could feel it deep in her gut. She was losing the male she loved. She was being punished for wishing Hank Kramer dead. A life for a life – the shifter code of justice.
