“What?” Had she left the base while he was away? Knowing the General, if she had, the man would have sent a team with her. More likely though was that she’d done an internet search. Trepidation clenched his stomach. Had she looked for something here or elsewhere? They hadn’t discussed the future… Clearing his throat, he tried to keep his voice even when he asked, “Where?”
“Here. At the infirmary.”
Oh, sweet relief. She was staying. If she had left, he would have followed. There was no doubt in his mind about that. But here, he could keep her safe from people like Doctor Dietrich who had politicians in her pockets and could pull strings like a puppet master. Just because they had the doctor in custody did not mean Paige was off the radar. She wouldn’t be until Jace eliminated every last one of them.
“I can’t believe how short-handed they were,” she was telling him. Levering herself up on her elbow, she added, “The General seemed skeptical at first but he came around when I pointed out that his two-person medical team would be zero if he let them drop from exhaustion.”
Jace frowned. “Two people? When did that happen?”
Granted, he didn’t pay much attention to what went on at the infirmary considering his ability to heal, but he could have sworn there were more than two people that worked there.
