“What did that mean?” I whispered.

“How about I show you?”

He took me upstairs and did as he said he would, he fucked me hard.

“I have to go into London tomorrow,” I said as I settled down in bed that evening.

“I’ll come with you. I could do with catching up with a couple of people.”

Jacob headed to the bathroom to shower. I admired his naked form and especially his arse. By the time he returned, I was already asleep, not deep enough to not feel him climb in bed beside me, though.

We travelled to London together and I was dropped off at the office. Jacob would meet me later in the afternoon and we had planned to dine out before heading home. When I kissed him goodbye, I felt a part of me missing. We’d become so close I hated to be away from him.

“Have you spoken to Hannah yet?” I asked Nathan as he accompanied me into the office.

“I’m meeting her later. Something isn’t right with her, she seemed scared. Either she knows I’m on to something or someone else is getting to her.”

“I think you need to go to the police with all this,” I said, getting worried again.

“I will, when I have something concrete to tell them.”

I sighed, annoyed at the statement. “If you tell the police what you suspect, surely they can investigate.”

“Leave it to me,” he replied, winking at me. It was most infuriating, and I slapped his chest.

I spent the day catching up with Jane and had a lovely lunch with Dory. She’d been travelling and was keen to tell me all about her escapades in Monaco. She’d been there for the Grand Prix and loved every minute of it. She also told me of the Formula 1 driver she was now dating. I frowned.

“You’re not into men,” I reminded her.

“Well, I thought I might have a change and he is so dishy; I couldn’t resist. He’s sooo pretty!”

I had no interest in racing and no idea who she was talking about but her enthusiasm for him was catching. We laughed, a lot, and it was great to spend time with her.

“I’ve missed you the past couple of weeks,” I said.

“Me too, and the girls. What the fuck is up with them? Did you know they all met up last week? Didn’t invite me.”

“Or me,” I replied. “They’ve been distant ever since I got with Jacob really.”

“Back to being the mean girls!”

Dory hadn’t taken to some of my friends who had come along a long time after her. It seemed that Julie, especially, was jealous of the relationship Dory and I had. It was silly and I’d hoped we’d all moved past that.

“Oh well, they don’t want to invite us, that’s fine. We’ll just lunch on our own,” I said.

We hugged and she made a promise that she would come and stay the next free weekend she had. As a socialite, she had a diary so full she needed two PAs to manage it!

“Shall I walk back with you?” she asked.

“No, I’m fine. Jacob is meeting me at work and then we’re heading home anyway. I can’t wait for you to come and stay.” I kissed my friend on the cheek and we went our separate ways.

I saw Jacob standing on the pavement outside my office. I raised my hand to wave and then frowned. He started to run towards me. I knew he was shouting; I could see his mouth moving, but I couldn’t quite understand what he was saying. It was odd because he wasn’t that far away from me.

Behind him was Nathan, also running but catching up quickly.

I stood still and then I heard it. I turned my head. A car drove up behind me, it emitted a strange sound and it took me a while to realise it was an electric car, which was why I hadn’t heard the engine. Then, everything seemed to slow down. I couldn’t understand what I was seeing. Hannah was wrestling with the driver; she had her hands on the steering wheel as did he. He took one hand off and punched her face.
