“Cheers,” Chad said.
“Spoilsport,” Devil muttered.
“Can she work on it tonight?” Darius asked Chad.
“She’s a night owl. As far as I can tell, she only sleeps between the hours of eight in the morning and noon.”
“Call her then. If Stella won’t mind,” Darius added.
Chad heaved himself into a sitting position and reached for his phone. “Stella won’t mind. Give me a minute,” he said, then walked out of the room.
They both stared after him, then Devil turned to Darius. “We forgot to see if anyone from the Chinese Council is attending the dinner tomorrow night.”
“I looked it up while you were reading the notebook,” Darius answered. “There are three people attending. The executive director and two board members, but that’s it.”
Devil made a face. “So not people likely to want to harm the president.”
Darius shrugged. “Who knows what really goes on in people’s minds, but I agree.”
She sighed. “So what now?” There were actually a thousand and one things they could be doing. But with Stella’s people still tailing the Lam sisters and the president tucked up in bed, it might be best for them to grab some sleep as well.
“Sleep?” Darius suggested with a smile.
“You read my mind,” she said, rising from the couch and holding out a hand. They were walking out of the sitting room when Chad walked back in.
“She’s on it. She’ll have something for us tomorrow,” he said.
“Thank you,” Devil said. “We’re headed to bed. You going to stay the night?”
Chad looked at her in horror. “Hell no. I’ve done that once before and never will I ever spend the night in one of your homes again. Unless it’s maybe Cyn’s, and I can be in the south wing.”
Devil laughed, and Darius looked confused. “After he hit on Six, Gavin invited him to stay with them during the prep for the Shanti Joy trial. Let’s just say he made very sure that Chad was clear on the status of Gavin and Six’s relationship,” Devil told him.
“I needed to bleach my ears the next day,” Chad muttered, gathering his things.
“You were just jealous,” Devil shot back, leaning into Darius, who stood behind her.
Chad slid his computer into his bag, then straightened. And grinned. “Maybe a little bit. Of all of you,” he added, his eyes going to Darius. “Have a good night. Please remember you’ll probably need to walk tomorrow, so take it a little easy.”
She and Darius were still chuckling when they turned out the lights. And turned to each other.
CHAPTERTWENTY-SEVEN
“Thank you,”Lily said to the woman at the door as she handed over two garment bags.
“Of course, I hope you enjoy,” she replied, then turned and left, her delivery duty complete. Darius sat at the table as Lily walked back to him, holding the bags up so they didn’t drag on the floor.
“Our attire for tonight?” he asked.
She nodded. “Do you want to see it?”
He eyed the bags. “Is it a tux for me?”
Her brow furrowed. “Of course. What else would it be?”
“You act like it’s not possible that your friends broke into my apartment, had my formal blues pressed, and then had them flown down here on a chartered plane.”
She paused, then grinned. “Actually, that’s fair. But no, these came from a boutique in Georgetown that Six likes.”
