“What is it?” he asked, taking the device from her. His eyes searched hers before he turned his attention to the article displayed on the screen.
“Danielle Lavigne was on that same trip, Ethan,” she said. “The article says she killed herself three days ago.”
“Sit,” he said, nodding to the nearby dining table. When she didn’t immediately move, he pulled his eyes from the article and looked at her. “You’re shaking so much, you’re about to fall down. Please, sit.”
She gave a jerky nod, then moved past him and took a seat. He hobbled over on one crutch, the computer in his other hand. Taking the chair beside hers, he continued to read. After a beat, he looked up.
“The article indicated she left a note,” Ethan said.
“I know. I’d like to see the contents, though,” she replied.
“You think it’s bogus?”
She gave another jerky nod.Whywas this happening? “She was terrified of heights,” Kara said, focusing on the only question she could answer. “She battled depression. I know that. But if she was going to kill herself, she would have overdosed or something like that. She wouldnothave thrown herself off a cliff.”
“Okay,” Ethan said as he pulled out his phone.
“Who are you calling?” she asked, glancing at the clock on the wall.
“Chad and Sabina. They both texted less than ten minutes ago—they are up. And even if they aren’t they’d want us to wake them.”
He didn’t give her a chance to respond, as the phone was already ringing. He turned on Speaker mode and set it on the table between them.
“Yeah,” Chad answered.
“There’s been another,” Ethan said.
A beat passed before Chad spoke again. “Let me get Sabina and you can tell both of us.”
Several seconds ticked by before Sabina’s voice came on the line. “Are you okay, Kara?”
Ethan’s gaze lifted from the phone to her. “I’m fine,” she answered. Ethan raised an eyebrow, but relatively speaking, shewasfine. She wasn’t dead. Like three of her colleagues.
“Talk to us,” Chad said. And for the next few minutes, Ethan took over and relayed the information in the article as well as Kara’s doubts about Danielle’s supposed suicide.
“I texted Colton and asked him to put some guys on the house,” Chad said when Ethan finished.
“What?” Kara asked.
“It’s just to be on the safe side. You have a good security system, but I’d feel more comfortable if we had operatives watching the house. Watching over the two of you,” Chad replied.
Kara opened her mouth to protest, but Ethan reached over and wrapped his hand around hers. “It’s just until we can make a plan. It would make me feel better knowing they are there and have our back. I have my gun, of course. But I’m not exactly mobile.”
She searched his face. “You think they’ll come after me?”
“I don’t want to take that chance. Do you?”
No, she didn’t.
“What about Sabina?”
“What about me?” her sister asked.
“Our hair may be different, but we look exactly alike. Whoever is doing this could easily mistake you for me,” she answered.
“I’ve got her covered. We also have security all over our land that will let us know if someone sets foot over the property line,” Chad replied.
“We do,” Sabina confirmed. The confidence Kara heard in her sister’s voice relieved some of her worry.
