“Speaking of travels,” Ethan said. “Do we know where he is?”
Chad let out a deep sigh. “In the wind, unfortunately. Wethinkhe caught a private plane after dumping his phone in his son’s car—”
“Class act,” Cody interjected.
Chad quirked a brow in agreement. “We’re working on the assumption that he left DC soon after returning from the conference in LA and either flew to Boston where Shane is or back out west. Based on that, Ava has identified six private planes that he could have caught a ride on.”
“Six doesn’t seem too bad,” Ethan said. He’d expected a lot more leaving from a major metropolitan area.
“That’s assuming we’re right,” Chad replied. “Even if we are, it will take a bit for Ava and the team to track those planes. The first leg won’t be hard. But if the flights hopped around, or he caught a connection, it will get more complicated.”
“And you still have people on Evelyn, Shane, Astrid, and Lucky?” Kara asked.
“Not Lucky,” Chad said. “His family in Mexico has their own security, so he declined ours. Shane and Astrid are being watched, though. And Warren agreed to keep an eye on Evelyn. Not that he needed any persuading.”
The room fell silent, then Kara spoke. “I would feel a lot better if we knew where he was. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but it is what it is.”
“Maybe we should skip the show tonight?” Ethan suggested. They’d seen three of Cody’s shows so far. Depending on how long they stayed on the tour, they’d have the chance to see more. But more importantly, he shared Kara’s concerns. He’d feel better if they knew where Peter Hilton was, too.
“There’s always tomorrow night,” Cody said, rising from his seat and stretching his lanky body. They’d agreed the night before that until they had more information on the explosion, the two of them would continue with the tour. Tia hadn’t been happy. Ethan didn’t blame her. If he were in her position, he’d feel the same. He’d want danger as far away from his client as possible. On the other hand, they had no information on the explosion and didn’t know if it was intentional or not. Nor was there any indication that Hilton knew Kara’s location.
“What time are we flying out tomorrow?” Cody asked, directing his question to Chad. With the incident the day before, he’d agreed to return to the house after the show, and they planned to fly to Tahoe together in the morning.
“Helicopter leaves at nine,” Chad said.
Cody nodded. “If you decide to stay home, give your passes to those two. They’ll work,” he said to Ethan, gesturing to Chad and Sabina. Sabina hadn’t ever seen Cody in concert and would love it. Ethan also didn’t mind the idea of having the house to themselves. Well, themselves and their security.
“Good luck and have fun tonight,” Kara called to Cody as he left. He raised a hand in response and muttered something about needing to beard the lion before disappearing.
“Any idea what that’s about?” Chad asked, watching the empty hallway.
“Alex Bantry,” Kara said. At the same time, Ethan replied, “His story to tell.”
Kara shot him a look. “Since when does the Warwick family let other family members have any privacy?”
Ethan stared at her for a beat. Dammit, she was right. The family had always been all up in one another’s business. Sometimes it was a pain in the ass, but for the most part, it kept them close and strong. Had they let Cody get away with not being a target of their meddling because of who he was? The more he thought about it, the more Ethan realized Kara had a point. Cody lived his life in the limelight 80 percent of the time. It had seemed like the right thing to do to not put him under the microscope when he was home, too. But in reality, they’d probably been doing him a disservice.
“You’re right,” Ethan said. Then, turning to Sabina, he relayed Cody and Tia’s suspicions about Alex. He told them about the investigation Cody’s lawyers were conducting and about her odd behavior during the tour. When he finished, he held Sabina’s gaze knowing she’d see the intent in his eyes.
“We need to look into her,” Sabina said.
Ethan nodded.
“I think it would be wise,” Kara said. “HICC is better than whatever lawyers Cody has. But reminding him that he’s still part of the Warwick clan is even more important.”
Sabina and Chad shared a look then she slid from his lap. “If you all will excuse me, I have some research to do.”
“Has she eaten anything today?” Kara asked after her sister left the room.
“A banana this morning,” Chad said, rising from his seat. “I’ll take her some snacks. Jumping into the Alex investigation is the right thing for all the reasons you said, Kara. But it will send her down another rabbit hole, so you may not see us until tonight.”
“Take our passes and go to the show,” Ethan said.
Chad’s gaze flickered between them. “Need a little alone time?” he asked the rhetorical question with a smile.
“Sabina will enjoy the show,” Ethan countered.
Chad chuckled. “Drop the passes by our room later today. I have a feeling we’re going to be holed up there for a while.”
