Samuel followed his gaze to the boards. “I spent my teen years in Nags Head with my mom and Josie. Since I was homeschooled, I had a lot of free time on my hands. I taught myself how to surf behind our house, or had the locals teach me over at Jeanette’s Pier.”

“My parents took us on vacation to Kill Devil Hills once, and I thought I could just grab a board and go,” Liam told him. “That wasn’t the case.”

“The waves over at Kill Devil aren’t something you want to fuck with on your first time.”

“Yeah, I broke my arm.”

Samuel snorted with a smirk, which Liam assumed was his version of a laugh. “It happens.”

“I heard you tried to teach Jamison how to surf in Mexico.”

“Tried,” Samuel emphasized. “It was a bit like teaching a cat how to swim.”

Liam sat, smiling at the picture in his head of Jamison struggling with a surfboard. “I would have loved to have seen that.”

“I bet.” Samuel reclined on the cushions of the couch. “But you’re not here to talk about my sister, so cut the shit, Cohen, and ask your questions.”

Yeah, Liam didn’t think the whole small talk thing would last long with a man like Samuel. “Remember, I’m going to get personal.”

“Remember, I don’t care.”

Liam hit record on his phone. “Let’s start with your time in Lauderdale.”

“I worked on a retirement community called Sandstone and spearheaded a hotel venture we were starting down there, along with numerous other remote projects for our Texas offices.”

“Did you enjoy the work?”

“Not really,” Samuel replied. “I would have preferred to work at our North Carolina division, but my Uncle Trevor is in charge there, and we don’t exactly get along.”

“Why is that?”

“Because he’s an asshole.”

“Does your father get along with him?”

Samuel shrugged. “No one does.”

“I guess there’s one in every family.”

“Fairweathers have more than one.”

Liam bet they did. “Did you date anyone while working in Lauderdale?”

“A few women.”

“Can I have their contact information?”

“If I still have it somewhere.”

Liam questioned him for several more minutes about his time in South Florida, already having scoured the county records last night. There wasn’t even so much as a parking ticket on Samuel.

“Come on, Cohen.” Samuel’s eyes sharpened with impatience. “Dig deeper.”

Accepting the challenge, Liam debated on pulling out the big guns, but decided to start slow.

“How long have you been in a sexual relationship with Evangeline Eddins?”

Samuel didn’t hesitate. “Two days.”
