I smiled. He hated being sappy. This was probably killing him, and if anything proved he meant it, it was that he’d say things like that.

Oh gods. He meant it.

Hemeantit.

We were mated.

My smile widened until my cheeks ached, and my kiss-bruised lips hurt. That tingle all the way to the tip of each finger and toe, in my scalp, everywhere, had to be…the bond, maybe? Or the effects of his alpha semen. Or just the fact that I loved him too much to contain it within my skin.

“I love you, Col. So much.” The words weren’t enough, but I was a doctor of genetics, not a damn poet. “I love you too. I love you—”

Colin swooped in and kissed the inadequate words right out of my mouth, and by the way his breath came short and fast and his hands clutched at me desperately, they’d been enough for him.

The kiss went on and on, and at some point he tugged me until I’d sprawled out on top of him, one of his hands fondling my ass and his fingers dipping perilously close to slipping inside me again. I pushed my knee up and hooked it over his thighs to hold myself open, feeling like a slut and not caring at all.

I lifted my head and smiled down at him, and he gazed up at me, all flushed and bright-eyed and disheveled. The mating bite gave a little throb, as if reminding me I’d been claimed.

Not like it was necessary. Colin had claimed me all those years ago when he sat down next to me, grinned, and made a stupid joke. Apparently I’d claimed him at the same time.

“I made a plan,” I murmured against his lips—because I couldn’t quite stop kissing him. “To be a cranky old professor married to my work, since I couldn’t have you. I was gonna be all self-sacrificing and pretend to be happy for you when you got mated and lived happily ever after.”

Colin let out a shaky laugh and yanked me down, kissing me in a way that left no doubt I belonged to him. He let me up again at last, but I knew it wouldn’t be for long. His cock had hardened against my leg, and his fingers weren’t being shy.

“You could’ve just called me, Newt. Jesus. And—”

“You could’ve just called me, too!” I protested.

“And,” he said more loudly, “although for the record I did show up first, and I wasn’t calling you because I loved you—”

“That’s a stupid reason for not calling me!”

“And!” Colin glared at me, daring me to say another goddamn word. I shut up, because the hand on my waist was in the perfect place to tickle me, and he wasn’t above it, the bastard. “And. Your plan fucking sucked, Newt. Just so you know.”

I bristled at that, because what the hell? I’d been doing the best with what I had! And maybe he could be a little grateful that I hadn’t been planning on blowing up his life, couldn’t he? Even though it’d been the wrong decision.

“Yeah, like your plans are always so freaking great—”

Colin flipped us so quickly and neatly I didn’t even know what was happening until I found myself flat on my back again.

“Fuck this,” he said, his voice all low and growly, eyes flashing. “New plan. I’m going to fuck you all night. I meanallnight, Newt, and I’m going to make you find those cuffs so I can strap your ankles down and hold you open so you can’t do anything but fucking take it until I can’t come in you anymore. You got a problem with that?”

My stomach clenched up, in the best possible anticipatory way. “That’s better than your usual plans,” I managed to choke out. “Um. Alphas have a lot of stamina, right?”

He grinned down at me, his patented evil Colin grin, one eyebrow raising. “We sure fucking do.”

I hid a smile. “Nah, I don’t believe you. I mean, you can’t possibly live up to the hype, so—”

Colin shoved my legs up and thrust inside me, and I broke off on a silent scream.

“Yeah, I can,” he rumbled in my ear. “You have no fucking idea.”

I was starting to get the idea.

“I love you!”

The words came out as a long moan, but apparently he understood me.

“I love you, Newt.” He thrust into me, hard and deep. “Now shut up and take it.”
