Trish moved her legs to bracket his thighs and nodded. As he leaned over her, she put pressure on his legs, pushing him into her. When he entered her, she let out a breath. Holy shit, he felt good.

“Okay?” Mike halted his hips and held still. He braced himself with his arms on either side of Trish’s shoulders and nibbled on her ear.

“Yes, and if you don’t move—” She didn’t have a chance to finish whatever threat she would come up with as he shoved the rest of his length into her. Mike took her at her word and set up a hard back and forth, racing them toward completion.

“Now!” she yelled as Mike let out a groan. Trish could feel him pulsing against her clit which made her shake.

When the aftershocks stopped, Trish reached up and pulled Mike to her, knocking out his arms so he fell on her. Wrapping her arms around him, she placed a kiss on the side of his mouth and whispered, “Thank you.” Mike chuckled and turned his head to kiss her back.

“Why are you thanking me?” he asked as he shifted off her, holding onto the condom as he pulled out.

“For taking a chance with me,” she answered. Mike shook his head and stood up.

“I’m the one that should be thanking you for that,” he corrected her as he walked toward the bathroom.

“Hey, Mike?” she called out.

“Yeah?”

“Nice ass,” she said and they both started laughing.

Chapter 13

Mike sat on his couch, staring at the dark TV, holding a little black box in his hands. If anyone had told him a year ago while he was standing in his empty living room that he’d be ready to propose to another woman within two years, he would’ve told them they needed to have their head examined. He would’ve been wrong, and they would’ve been right though.

Being with Trish was everything that being with Denise hadn’t been. Trish understood when he couldn’t talk about something; she understood his focus, his drive, his commitment to the Army in a way that no one other than the heptad ever had… including his parents.

Trish was meeting him at his house after she finished teaching for the day. She’d been teaching two classes a week at Dance Now and he could see how she was emerging from her grief. He’d like to think he was a big part of that too. He’d find out tonight when he asked her to marry him.

The radar sound echoed through the house from where he’d dropped his phone on the ledge. Walking over, he picked it up and laughed.

Brian: did you do it, you chicken?

Mackey: don’t let this one go, jackass. She’s meant for you

Mooney: the boys want to know when they’ll see their cookie lady again

Mike: Trish hasn’t gotten here yet. I’m sitting here staring at the TV waiting

Spook: well don’t think yourself out of proposing

The heptad knew him so well.

Trish pulled up in front of Mike’s house and shifted into park. She was tired but it was a good tired. The class had gone well and she could see how the different girls were progressing. There were two, maybe three, that she thought had the talent to push through and possibly dance professionally. Trish was thinking about suggesting that Stephanie check with the parents to see if there was any interest in a competition team. A thought for another day.

She climbed out of the car and walked up the pathway. Mike had told her that he was on a month-to-month lease on this house. He hadn’t been sure that he liked the neighborhood when he moved in, so he asked for the flexibility. Looking around, Trish could see why. It was a nice area, but something just felt off.

When she got to the stoop, she knocked and pushed open the door. Stopping and waiting for the other to answer the door had gone out the window a few months ago. They were at each other’s houses every night. Trish actually couldn’t think of a night in the past three months that she’d slept alone, except when Mike was in the field.

Mike was sitting on the couch, with the TV off, phone in his hand. “Hey soldier, can I interest you in some dinner?” she asked as she sat down next to him.

“Will you marry me?” Mike asked.

What the fuck? Nice lead up, jackass. Nothing like just springing the proposal on her. Didn’t even give her a kiss first.
