Chapter Five
The girls were excited when they got to Garrett’s parents. Guess Kim hadn’t brought them around recently. His father had the day off, so he was home too. Garrett wasn’t going to say anything as to why he had the girls, just tell his parents that he wanted the company today until Kelsey opened her mouth.
“We playeded hide and seek with Mommy. It scareded Erin, Papa,” she told his father.
“Garrett?” he asked as a fierce look came to his eyes.
“’s scary, Gamma,” Erin said from his mother’s lap. They were sitting in his parents’ living room. The doc had opted to wait in the car while he brought the girls in.
“Son,” his mother said. Garrett shrugged and looked away. He didn’t want to tell them that Kim had been higher than a kite and wanted to kill someone in lion form. Garrett also didn’t want to lie to his parents.
“I’m not sure, Mom, Dad. Heading over to Uncle Mario’s to discuss things with him.” Garrett settled on mostly the truth.
“Why do the girls and you have the faint scent of a lion I don’t recognize?” his dad asked, discretely sniffing Kelsey from where she was next to him on the couch.
“Another thing to talk to Uncle Mario about,” he said. Yup, the list was getting longer and longer. He just hoped that his uncle had some free time.
His father nodded. “You go deal with my brother. We’ve got grandcubs to play with. What do you think, Bev? Tickle monster time?” His father held up his hands and wiggled his fingers at Kelsey while his mother did the same with Erin.
“The tickle monsters haven’t gotten to play. They’re all about tickling little girls,” she said reaching for Erin. Both girls squealed in such a high pitch they all covered their ears. They jumped up and ran down the hall off the living room.
“Garrett—” Garrett cut his father off once he was sure the girls were out of ear range.
“I’ll let you know when I find out what’s going on, Dad. I really don’t have any answers for you. I just know that I was out on patrol before the researcher arrived. I know I told you about him. I was almost back at the station, I heard a yowl and when got to the curve right before the cliff, Kim was in shifted form between a man and the girls were huddled together — also shifted— near the base of a tree. I calmed her down using a bit ofsuadereand she ran off.” He paused, not wanting to tell his parents what he suspected. “She looked high, Dad. When I got the girls back to the station, they told me about Kim’s newfriend… and I use that word lightly.” Garrett watched as rage passed over his father’s face. Oh yeah, the new friend wasn’t going to live long. “The strange lion scent? The man on the path turned out to be the researcher and he smells like cat but denies being a shifter. Figured all of this was Uncle Mario’s realm.” Garrett rushed out a quick explanation, watching to make sure the girls didn’t come back. “So I’m taking the doc to meet Uncle Mario and telling him about Kim.”
His parents frowned but nodded. “You go see your uncle. We’ve got the girls,” his mom said.
“And goddess help anyone that comes looking for them,” his dad interjected.
“I’ll let you know what’s going on,” Garrett said as he walked out the door.

Rob sat in the Explorer and waited, trying not to think too hard. Where the fuck had that growl come from? He’d never growled in his life. Moaned and groaned during sex — yeah, he tended to be vocal — but he’d never made such an animalistic sound in his life.
Pulling out his cell, he figured he’d let his mom know that he got here safely. Yes, he was a grown man, but she still worried about him.
Rob:Got here safe and sound. Met the ranger while he was naked protecting some cubs.
Mom:Naked? Is he cute? Cubs?
Good Lord, his mother just couldn’t stop trying to match him up. Ever since his brother got married, she wanted him to settle down too.
Rob:He’s going to help me with my research. That’s it. He isn’t cute just drop dead gorgeous. And the cubs were his nieces.
He hit send before he realized what he typed to his mother. Shit.
Mom:Gorgeous? He’s a shifter? Maybe you should stay away from him.
Now that was strange. His mother telling him to stay away from a man that he’d acknowledged was handsome? What the hell?
Rob:I’m not planning on anything other than a working relationship, Mom. And why would it matter if he’s a shifter?
Mom:Never mind. Just stay calm.
Stay calm? Huh? Okay, his mom had lost it.
Rob:Will do. Tell Dad I love him. Love you too.
