He walked with me ten feet away and turned his back on the room like he had the other time. “I was sorry to hear that you fell ill.”
I fell ill? That’s how he was going to play this? I gave him a nod. “It was most inconvenient.”
The king patted my arm. “Well, we shall have to reschedule our luncheon and finish ourgame.”
The way he said it made my skin crawl. I somehow managed to get out, “Of course, Your Grace.”
And with that, he headed over to another set of women.
I gave Renna a relieved look and headed back over to them. I was somehow still tired even though I had slept all that time I was knocked out, but I found listening to the women was also good for me. To be reminded that not everything in this castle was so dark.
“Jorah,” Keir said as he came up between Renna and I. “I am so sorry you were sick.”
I wanted to roll my eyes at him but stated. “Thank you, Your Grace.”
“Care to walk?” he asked, putting out his elbow.
“Of course,” I responded back.
As soon as we had left the others, he spun toward me and said, “What are you doing here, you brilliant woman?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I just didn’t feel like waiting for him to find me again. I felt like coming in with my head held somewhat high and showing him I was still here. Not cowering.”
“Brilliant,” Keir repeated. “I can’t wait to dismiss and head upstairs.”
I gave him a smile. “I look forward to it.”
“Are you feeling okay? Or shall I start dismissing now?”
Aiyana was walking towards us.
“Incoming,” I warned him. “So any time would be great.”
“Jorah,” Aiyana said to me. “How unfortunate you fell ill.”
I didn’t smile at all. “Yes.”
“It’s too bad you couldn’t have been here for the whole meal,” she added, letting me know she wasn’t pleased with my attention-grabbing entrance.
I tilted my head. “I wasn’t sure I’d be here at all, but I couldn’t miss a chance to see Prince Keiran and I also don’t like to skip these amazing desserts.”
She smiled at me, but I knew she was fuming, absolutely fuming.
“You sure it’s in that order?” Keir deadpanned.
I laughed. “No, not entirely.”
Aiyana stood with us, not really joining in the conversation, and not looking happy about it either.
“Ladies,” Keir stated, “I need to grab Prince Krewan and begin dismissing for the evening.”
I bowed to Keir and left before I was stuck alone with Aiyana. I headed back over to my window, pleased the night was wrapping up.
Yes, I was tired and weak, but I felt better that I had showed up and gotten it over with. I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy Nerede the following day knowing that I would have to face the king again upon my return. Owen would’ve had to drag me back.
I was the last to be dismissed.
“Jorah,” Keir stated.
