He patted Renna on the shoulder and leaned over to brush a kiss to my temple.
“Your Grace,” Gwen said as she stood to bow.
He turned slightly to put up a hand to stop her. “Please. Stay put. All of you. Finish your game.”
“Your Grace,” Nara greeted.
Renna spun and greeted him too, “Your Grace.”
My eyes went to his, to find him already looking at me. “Your Grace.”
He squinted at me briefly. “I just gave Owen the day off. I’ll take you back up whenever you’re ready.”
He gave Owena day off? “Thank you.”
And then he moved to somewhere behind me, I assumed to the windows letting in the sun again.
Long ago there had been a street cat that had liked to bathe in the sun on the streets of Nerede. Wherever the streets were warmest, there he would be. Maybe Krew had a thing for the sun like that. He was drawn to both the sun and rain it seemed. Likely for two very different reasons.
“We were just finishing up,” Renna told Krew.
“Renna won,” Nara admitted dully.
“Is that so?” he asked.
“Unfortunately,” I muttered.
“Don’t act so surprised, My Prince,” Renna said over her shoulder to Krew.
I heard a soft sound of a key on the piano being struck and snapped my head that direction to see Krew sitting at the piano bench. He pushed a few keys, and then the most beautiful melody began playing.
I turned toward Renna with wide eyes. I knew Krew said he had played piano, but I didn’t really think he’d just plop down at the piano with all of us in the room.
The look she gave me, the way her eyes went wide too as she gave me the barest of nods let me know that he was pretty good at it.
Nara gave me a look like she was thinking more wicked thoughts.
Gwen bowed as she stood. “Have a great afternoon, everyone.” Her eyes landed on mine. “Thank you for inviting me. It was fun to get out and see everyone.”
I smiled as she and Nara headed for the door.
Nara waved. “Bye, Jorah.”
“Bye!”
Renna reached over and squeezed my wrist. “Good luck.”
I squinted at her. “Where are you rushing off to? I thought your afternoon was free.”
She grinned. “I imagine I’ll spend my afternoon similar to how you spend yours.” She paused and leaned in to whisper, “Flirting.”
“Renna!”
She shrugged. “He kissed you in front of all of us. He’s not hiding it, so I don’t know why you are.” She stood and added at a normal volume. “Gotta run. Things to do!” She looked over at Krew. “Bye, Your Grace!”
He didn’t stop playing but gave her a look like he was annoyed.
And then it was just us. Alone in this room again. This room that I may or may not have straddled him in. For gravity’s sake, of course.
