While Krew kept playing the most beautiful song, I picked up the cards and cleared the table of our teacups, setting them on a tray the castle staff would take care of later.

That done and wanting to be closer to both him and the sound, I sat down next to him, while giving him plenty of space on the bench to still reach all the keys.

He must have decided that wouldn’t do, because before I even saw him use his magic, three orbs were near me, surrounding me on three sides, leaving only the path to him free.

“This again?”

“This again,” he confirmed while never taking his hands from the keys.

I slid over a little, not wanting to be in his way.

“Closer,” he demanded though his eyes remained on the keys and not on me.

“Krew, we have to head upstairs soon,” I told him. “Silvia insisted I—”

In the same breath he stopped playing, his lips were immediately on mine. The same fingers that had been mid song found themselves in my hair and around my waist.

Somewhere along the way, we’d crossed a line. Maybe a few of them, also maybe a lot of them. First we’d gone from pretending to real. And now, though both of us fully understood how doomed our relationship was and had always been, we also spent the day stealing random touches whenever we could. As if we both understood those stolen moments may be all we’d ever have.

He pulled back to say, “I have a meeting with The Six while you are meeting with Silvia.” But then his lips were back on mine, a total contradiction to the words he’d just spoken.

“Krew,” I said as I kissed him once more and then moved my head, so it was out of reach. “We should head back to your wing, then.”

He trailed kisses along my jaw. “What good is it being a prince if I cannot do whatever it is I wish to do?” He moved to kiss the other side. “And I happen to bepreciselywhere I wish to be.”

I giggled.

Reluctantly, he pulled back. “Fine. I’ll go to a boring meeting. You go to Silvia. But you’ll also have to go to dinner with me tonight since I sent Owen out for the day.”

“He won’t be at the meeting?”

He shook his head. “No. I asked him to do something else today.”

“Oh.” That didn’t really explain much, but I figured it had to do with the disloyal.

He kissed my cheek. “You’re stuck with me today, love.”

I grinned. “It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.”

“Prince Krewan has requestedthat you get to choose and design your dress for the next ball,” Silvia explained. She didn’t have her sketchpad out yet, but I was just sure it was hiding here somewhere.

“Why?” I asked.

“Well, the princes have decided that at the final five, the color coordination need not go on any longer. This next ball should mark the final five of each Assemblage.”

I gasped. I was finally free to wear whatever color I wanted?

Silvia laughed. “Knowing how you felt about the whole color coordinating, he wanted you to be able to choose whatever you’d like. Anything at all. And this time not limited by a costume like for Hallows’ Eve.”

My mouth fell open as I looked in the direction of the doorway adjoining the two rooms, the other of which he was currently in with The Six. I could see the sound barrier at the door, but not him.

I looked at Silvia like she’d gone mad.

She beamed. “It gets better.”

“How?”
