I smiled at him best I could. “Thanks for the walk, buddy. I think I’ll be okay. Eventually.”
As soon as we got inside the castle, my hands and fingers started burning from the warmth in contrast to the cold, so I began rubbing them together.
“That was—” Owen shook his head. “They were worried about you.”
“Or maybe they just wanted to make sure we left them alone while they ate?”
Owen shook his head again. “Rafe never took his eyes off of you. I swear to you, they were worried about you.”
He walked in the direction of the elevator, and I sighed with relief. “Thank goodness.”
Owen snorted. “I hauled your heavy ass down three flights of stairs. My workout for the day is done.”
I shook my head as we boarded the elevator.
“Please take a shower and get warmed up when we get back up there,” Owen pleaded. “And eat something.”
I wanted to argue, but he had been so nice all morning that I just couldn’t. “Okay, but no Silvia please.”
“Deal.”
Showered up, I decided pajamas were in order though it was only midafternoon. I was going to try to finally sleep. Maybe sleep would come. Maybe it wouldn’t. But either way, I was shot.
I braided my hair back myself and then headed out to Krew’s room. Owen was there on the couch.
I grabbed a dinner roll off the tray of food Owen had delivered and reached for the journal off the footrest in case I needed it. Chewing a bite of the roll, I headed toward the bed instead of the chair.
“Do you want me to leave or stay, Jorah?” Owen asked, no judgement in his tone.
I sighed, taking another bite of the roll before placing it on the nightstand. I was too tired to even chew right now. “I’m going to try to sleep. Stay.”
“Krew said you didn’t sleep much last night.”
I groaned as I got under the covers. “I didn’t at all. He didn’t sleep much either.”
Owen got up to draw the curtains, but then paused. “Wait. Do you want it darker in here, or not?”
“Not,” I admitted. “I’m scared to sleep.”
Owen gave me a nod. “Okay.”
“Not going to make fun of me for that?”
Owen shook his head and kicked off his boots as he sat on the bed against the headboard next to me, though on top of the covers and not under them. “Nope. I’m a prick, but I’m not that big of a prick.”
I got situated on my pillow and fought off a yawn. “Says the person who couldn’t even give me one full day to mope.”
“Okay, so I’m a prick and a bit of a pusher,” Owen laughed. “I’m also not at all your normal bed mate but there is one thing I am better at.” He paused dramatically. “Allow me to lull you asleep with my snoring.”
A smirk was all I had left in me before my eyelids drooped shut.
CHAPTER29
Islept the entire rest of the day and woke at dawn the next morning. I had only today to get myself together and then tomorrow I would have to face the king and parade around for another ball. Sometime while I was sleeping, Owen had been replaced by an exhausted Krew. I woke briefly but was so warm and comfortable, I went right back to sleep for another few hours.
But now needing to use the lavatory, I was forced to get out of bed. I read Krew’s mother’s journal for a bit, and then changed for training with Owen.
I waited until I was sure he was the guard outside the door, spending a few minutes being terrified to open the door and sneak out. I really didn’t want to see Easton any time in the near future, or my night guards at all for that matter. But then I thought about it rationally. Krew had tried to kill Easton for me. There were likely guards outside the door to Krew’s wing, as there were all hours of the day, but Easton wouldn’t be there. Not ever again. I had a lot of things to fear in this castle, but Krew wouldn’t let Easton near me anymore, so Easton wasn’t one of them.
