I put my hand on his cheek. “This castle is full of so many bright and wonderful things, but as long as your father is in it, there are equally dark and terrifying things lurking around every corner and hallway.”

“I know,” he whispered.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. “I don’t know if I will be able to sleep now.”

He ran his fingers through my hair. “It’s hours from dawn. We need to at least try. I will be here with you the whole night through.”

I played with his tailcoat lapel. “Are you sure you don’t want to distract me for the last few hours of the night and erase everything I just saw from my memory?”

He took in a sharp breath. “I’d love nothing more, but I can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

He cocked his head, bringing it in close enough to brush a gentle kiss to my lips. “Won’t. I don’t get to touch you in every way that a man can when I know my time with you might be limited. That’s not fair to you.”

I squinted at him. “So the rest of you cannot but your mouth can?”

He shrugged. “It’s responsible for itself. Believe me, I’ve tried to keep it away from you.”

I laughed at how serious he seemed. “Fine, My Prince. For now. Until we find out what’s in those journals anyway.”

We changed and fell into bed next to one another, and surprisingly, sleep did find us both. We were both far too used to the horrors of this castle.

CHAPTER34

“Here, love.” Krew handed over my pencil and papers for the orphanage.

I gave Owen sitting across from us the regular sound barrier look and immediately one was in place in the carriage.

“We should have brought a journal or two with us,” I said.

The three of us plus Keir had worked for hours the day before, going page by page in the few journals I had looking for more messages. It was an extremely tedious process, as we could only do a few pages at a time and then needed to dry them with a hair dryer before doing a few pages more. Krew could use his magic too, but had to go so slow since he was worried about weakening the pages, so we found the hair dryer on low worked just as well. We were doing our best not to damage the books. Plus even if we rushed it, if the paper got too wet, it’d just tear.

So far, there had been a lot of the two messages we had already seen, and one new one, but it essentially said the same information except to add one thing: the king had gotten into poison. But we had already known that.

Krew shook his head while looking at me. “No. The journal work is limited to our wing only, Jorah. We can also only do a few journals at a time or else someone may get suspicious. I’ll swap out the three we’ve already checked tomorrow.”

“That is nerve-wracking though,” Owen said. “I’d feel better if they were all in our possession.”

I sat there smiling, trying and failing to wipe the look off my face. They gave each other a confused look and turned toward me.

“What?”

“Why are you smiling like you’ve just seen a baby wolf in the forest?” Owen asked.

My cheeks heated as I turned to Krew. “You just saidour wing.”

Krew gave his head a shake. “Is it not our wing? Do you not also live there?”

I rolled my eyes. “No, I live there, but it is your wing,Prince Krewan. I am a mere consort in your harem.”

“A mere pain in the ass more like,” Owen added.

“A mere distraction of all the best varieties,” Krew agreed while Owen snickered.

I laughed but got to work writing the letters on the window ledge of the carriage, the hardest area on which to write.

An hour later as I finished, Krew asked, “Would you like to come with me to the orphanage today? Deliver those in person? And then we can go to your mother’s together?”
