“What are you thinking?”
He gave me the smallest of smiles before eating up all the space between us. He wrapped his hands around the back of my neck. “I am thinking that I don’t know what you are. Nor do I really care. You areyou, Jorah. And I am just grateful that I get to love you for every moment until the darkness pulls me under.”
The tears immediately pricked my eyes.
“If that is within the year, so be it. If that is the rest of our incredibly long lives, so be it.” He brushed a gentle kiss upon my lips. “Either way, I’m yours. Either way, I get to love you for every day of it.”
I kissed him until I needed air. Leaning back, I put my hand on top of his still along my face. “I love you, Krew.”
“I know,” he whispered, leaning down to rest his forehead against mine.
“This has been the worst charade ever,” I added.
His lips twisted into one of those rare smiles that left me breathless every time. “It was only ever a charade for you, love.”
CHAPTER40
Owen and I were back to training. It had taken two weeks for his back to feel well enough for the push and pull of swinging a wooden sword. And even now, we only sparred for a short amount of time, not wanting to push it too fast. The ointment from the healer was better than the stuff Silvia had and was doing wonders on both of our injuries. Silvia’s lathering of it on us was just a new part in our daily routine.
“Hatchet has some news for you,” Owen offered as we stretched, stealing me out of my thoughts. “He is going to try to make it today to talk to you.”
My breath caught. More information on the bonding.
We hadn’t been able to find out any more information about the object on the king through the queen’s journals. For the past week we poured over the journals, going page by page, now even pages where the princes were not mentioned. I wasn’t sure we’d find out a thing more. It would be up to us to figure out what the object was and how to get it away from the king.
Since we were at a standstill on the journals, I was looking forward to at least learning something about the bonding.
I was nervous, yes, but also just wanting to finally know. Was it even possible for me to have magic? Or would I forever just have Iron Will? Forever pose a weak spot in Krew’s magic?
Owen put up the orbs with his magic and I took off for the door. I put everything spinning in my mind on pause, the journals, Krew, bonding, all of it just put on hold so I could focus.
I was at the door in record time.
“That was impressive,” Owen said with a nod.
I grinned, putting my hands on my hips. “Let’s head to shower up. It appears I’ll be waiting around for Hatcher today.”
It was afternoon when I heard the creaking noise of the secret passage to Krew’s wing being opened. I put the tiny paintbrush in the journal page I was about to begin on and put the book gently on the footrest before Owen and I moved to the next room over.
“Jorah,” Hatcher smiled at me before turning toward Owen, “Where’s Krewan?”
Owen gave a shrug while he put up a sound barrier. “With the king and Keir.”
“So we might not have long?” he asked, eyes darting to the door.
“Afraid not,” Owen said with a winced smile.
“Then I’ll get right to it. Krewan has almost as many spies as Theon does in this castle.” Hatcher’s eyes settled back on me.
I didn’t so much as move a muscle as I waited for him to tell me. This was the moment I had been waiting on for weeks. To find out if I could be given magic or not. To find out if I would become Enchanted or not.
“There is only one couple I was able to find with an Iron Will and Enchanted pairing,” he began, moving to sit down in his usual spot for meetings with The Six. “Another pairing I heard about but both partners have long since passed.”
I didn’t even move to sit down with him, I couldn’t. The only thing I could do was listen to the information.
“We don’t know about the blood components of either pairing,” Hatcher continued. “Neither person with Iron Will knew their blood could heal. But,” he paused, “in both instances, both people with Iron Will were able to receive a drop of magic in the bonding. One in a kin bonding, the other in a heart bonding.”
I let out a deep breath. Okay. So we still didn’t know if my blood would be able to heal, but we did know now I would be able to receive magic.
