I shook my head and was sure to look him in the eyes when I said, “Don’t be.”
There was a click of the door opening and then Owen was back.
He grinned and looked between us. “Done already?”
Krew glared at him. “Shut up.”
I rolled my eyes then joined in on the glaring at Owen. “You are going to have entirely too much fun with this fake relationship, aren’t you?”
Owen glanced at Krew. “Absolutely.”
Krew shook his head as he addressed Owen. “I’m heading out to train and do the rounds. I’ll be back in a few hours. Silvia is on her way and Renna will be here in a few hours.”
Owen gave him a nod as he left. Then his attention moved solely to me. “Morning, Princess.”
I squinted at him.
“Krew let you have his bed, huh?”
I kept squinting. “He said it’d be helpful if anyone came to his room, I just didn’t think it’d happen already this morning.”
“Being in bed with him or the guard barging in?”
I tipped my head back and groaned. “I slept alone, Owen. The guard.”
He chuckled. “I know.”
“So you’re done being pissed at me, I take it?”
He shook his head. “No. Not at all. But I am enjoying this whole charade we have going on.”
I slumped even further against the headboard. “Help me find a dress. Let’s go feed Rafe before my day of pampering.”
He went quiet. So quiet I looked back at him. “What?”
His magic flashed for only a moment. “I’m trying to figure out if I can trust you enough to walk out there to feed Rafe or not. Or if I need to send someone else to do it for us.”
I closed my eyes a moment. “You can, but do what you have to. I understand.”
“No more running?” Owen asked.
I gave him a nod. Running was not the path to freedom. That pathway only ended in being detained and tortured by the king. My road to freedom was currently tied up in my ability to fake feelings for Krew instead. “No more running.”
* * *
“What a dinner that must have been,”Silvia said to me as she started the bath in Krew’s rather large bathroom.
Owen and I barely had time to feed the wolves. Silvia brought me a day dress and then told me to be back in a half an hour. We hadn’t even had time to go to the Dead Lake, it was straight back inside and into ball prep we went.
“You have no idea,” I told her from where I sat on the edge of the tub. “I’m still processing it all myself.” Of course, only a few people knew the whole story of the Assemblage switch that had set the castle abuzz. There weren’t any other women sent home for this ball either, just the switch.
“Well, there haven’t been twins in four generations of Valanova heirs, so what were they to expect with two Assemblages going at once?”
She was way too happy this early in the morning. I was still tired.
As if sensing my very thought, she handed me a cup of steaming tea.
“Thank you,” I told her. “I’m going to be a wreck all day, I’m sure. Just a forewarning.”
