“We cannot kill you, love,” Krew said. “Then we’d lose our blood source.”

I was confident Krew wasn’t really talking to me at all.

“No one will go near you, dear,” the king added firmly.

“You already knocked her out once in a poor effort for this very thing, Father,” Krew reminded him.

“I only wondered what it was that is in her blood to make her immune to our magic,” the king said innocently. “I have been trying to figure out why some people have Iron Will for years. I meant her no real harm even then.”

I wanted to smile or do a little dance. We had him. The king was fully taking the bait now. I didn’t believe him for a second, but he was taking the bait.

“Well, we need to figure this out before someone else does,” Krew snapped. “So I am left with no other option. I will give you a sample of her blood with the understanding that you lend me your most trusted scientist and tell no one else.”

The king gave him a nod. “You have my word. Unlike your previous attachments, sheis property of the crown and thus we shall protect her, son.”

Pure rage hit my blood. I wanted to throttle the king and wasn’t sure how Krew didn’t. It wasn’t as if the king simply hadn’t approved of Cessa. He had hermurdered. And the king believed her child, their child, had been killed along with her.

Krew’s magic somehow stayed at bay. I thought I could feel the buzz of his magic, but his skin stayed completely clear of it. He pulled a vial out of his tailcoat and a dagger from his boot.

“You do not trust me to do it?” the king asked.

Krew didn’t even hesitate. “No.”

The king grinned. “Then I raised you right, my son.”

It was awkward standing there in a gown so Krew could take my blood while his poor excuse of a father watched our every movement and kept making comments that made me want to grab the dagger and drive it into the king’s chest cavity myself.

“I’ll prick your finger and squeeze it, love,” Krew said gently to me. “I’ll try to make it as pain-free as possible.”

I didn’t care, I just wanted it over with.

I looked at Krew and not the dagger as he poked my pointer finger and the blood came to the surface. He squeezed my finger into the vial and dripped five drops into it. He took a kerchief out of his pocket and wrapped my finger up as he finished. It had taken a minute or less. A minute and five drops of blood to bait the king.

Just before Krew handed the vial over to his father, he stopped and leaned in. “If anyone other than you handles her blood or goes near her without my approval, I will do to them what I did to Michael Noyer. And I know how you value your trusted scientists. Understood, father?”

The king smiled. “Understood.” Then after a few seconds he added, “And here I thought you were too busy rolling in the sheets with her to be up to much.”

Krew squinted at him. “Like I said, she’s valuable.”

The king’s laugh boomed as he slapped Krew on the back. “In more ways than one, it seems. Go on, you two.”

Krew took my hand, the one he hadn’t pricked, and headed for the door.

“And Krewan?” the king said from behind us.

We both looked at each other before looking at the king over our shoulders.

“You were right to come to me with this. I’ll get it figured out,” the king said kindly. “And thank you, Jorah, for your willingness to help.”

I smiled as Krew and I walked out the door hand in hand.

That asshat truly had no idea just how far I was willing to go to help his sons.

Minutes later, Krew went right past Easton waiting outside the door of his wing and let go of my hand to swing open the door himself. His chest immediately began heaving as he took in huge pulls of air.

“Krew?” Owen asked, on our heels as we all entered his room.

“I need to use my magic.Now.” His back was to us as he faced the double doors to the veranda and began taking his tailcoat off with shaky hands.
