But did he watch me because he was trying to keep me safe, or for other reasons?

“I’ll make it up to you, promise,” I offered.

“Some of those cinnamon oat cookies?” she asked, perking right up.

I laughed. Owen barely let her have any last time. “I’ll make a batch and somehow hide them from Owen for you.”

Silvia grinned. “That’s my girl. Have fun tonight.”

“Thanks.”

The ball itself I was somewhat looking forward to. Krew had told me he would point out the people to avoid tonight, so I had a little homework, something to do other than stand there and attempt to look pretty.

I sat at the bench at the foot of the bed and looked at the stars and the darkening sky.

Krew had been gone almost all of the day, I assumed with the king and his scientist about my blood. And I wondered how he was holding up after not getting much sleep and then having to be around his father all day.

I decided to read my book a little longer while I waited.

Sure enough, I heard rapid footsteps and there he was.

I looked up from my book to see him come to a stop. “You’re still here,” he said breathlessly.

I smirked. “You haven’t sent me home yet, My Prince.”

His lips twisted into a smile. “I need to get right back down there. Sorry I’ve been absent all day.”

“They find anything in my blood?”

Krew grinned now. “No. Just like we knew they wouldn’t.”

He kept standing there, looking like he wanted to stay, but I knew he was in a hurry. “Go shower. I just wanted to see you before I went down.”

He sighed and then did just that. I heard the sound of the water turning on a few seconds afterward.

I sat there looking at the cloudy and almost black sky, when I realized it was beginning to snow. And not just wispy little flakes either, these were monstrosities. I had never seen snow so thick before. Unable to help myself, I opened up the veranda to see the snow pelting and covering the trees. It was gorgeous. I took only a step forward before the huge snowflakes hit my skin and had me backing away. I didn’t want to ruin my hair and makeup that Silvia had taken such care with, so at the open door was probably the closest I could get for now. But I already couldn’t wait to see it in the morning.

I was still standing there when I heard Krew heading for what I assumed was the door, but instead, I heard him walk toward me.

“Would you like a blanket?”

I grinned as I spun toward him. “No. It’s snowing! Isn’t it lovely?”

His eyes never left mine. “Entirely.” Then his lips turned up at the corners. “You have snow in your hair.” He reached over to wipe it off.

“Silvia will be pissed if she finds out I ruined my hair before I even got down there,” I laughed. “Oh well. Worth it.”

He was still just standing there, and I wanted to ask him if he was okay, but I also didn’t want to bring up last night at all. His magic was at bay. For now.

Instead, I asked, “Will you find me down there toward the beginning? You promised me you’d point out the people to avoid.”

“Sure, love.” He gave his head a shake. “They really had no idea what they were doing when they let you in this castle.”

With another smile, he was gone.

I stood there for a few minutes more, the longest I could take the cold while watching the snow, before following his lead and heading down.

“So Owen,” I began. “Silvia said it’s going to either be raining or snowing for the next few days. Does this me—”
