“I haven’t seen Silvia this happy in years,” Krew muttered to Renna.

Not wanting to sit down with them and further be a third wheel, I sat down in a gray chair closest to the fireplace. One which identically matched the one in Krew’s bedroom. It was perfectly placed both places to read a book or sit by the fire. Not to mention it was soft and seemed to hold my frame from the moment I sat down. I loved this chair already and I had only just met it.

“Hi,” I offered to Renna.

“Hi,” she smiled back like she wasn’t bothered at all.

Why wasn’t she? She absolutely should be. I would be if our roles were reversed. Was she really just that great at acting and playing her part?

“I’m so sorry,” I told her, my voice catching on the last word.

“Jorah,” she began.

I shook my head and cut her off. “I know the two of you are close and I don’t want to come between that. You can pretend like I’m not here. I’ll be spending a lot of time in the kitchens because I owe Owen some cookies. Also the forest. Because I like it there. So I will do my best to stay out of your way, I promise.”

I was talking to Renna, but also a little to Krew. I felt like I had taken over up here. And I wasn’t sure how Prince Darkness felt about that.

Renna shook her head. “Don’t you dare. Don’t hide away.Youhave nothing to be ashamed about, Jorah.”

I switched my eyes to Krew’s steel blue ones. “How much did you tell her?”

His eyes didn’t leave mine. “All of it. She’s my spy. And she can’t know what to spy on if she doesn’t know everything.”

There was a lot to unpack in that explanation. “Oh.”

“Uhh,” Renna said as she spun toward Krew, “you should probably add the whole ‘you and I won’t be getting married’ bit.”

He looked at her a moment. “I wasn’t sure if you wanted me to add that or not. That’s your call.”

What in the hell was even going on?Of course they’d be getting married someday. They were perfect together. She’d been his frontrunner from the very start.

Renna turned toward me and smiled. “Krew and I will not be getting married, Jorah. It’s not a possibility. He told me you were concerned about our friendship because of your switching Assemblages. But I want to assure you, there will be no problems from me.”

My jaw was gone. Flopped on the floor somewhere. Nowhere to be found. “I’m sorry, what?”

Renna beamed at me. “We cannot get married, Jorah, because I already am married.”

CHAPTER3

“What?”

I had to be hearing things. Or maybe I was still asleep, and this was all a very long dream. That was the only explanation for what my ears just heard.

Renna smiled at me. “I’m fairly certain I can trust you by this point, but this is not something a lot of people know.”

“Obviously.” I shook my head. “I don’t understand. So you don’t wish to marry Krew? You aren’t attracted to him even a little?”

She pressed her lips together as if to keep from laughing. “Jorah, honey, no.”

Krew was smirking, looking from one of us to the other as if amused.

Renna looked up at the ceiling and sighed. “Oh, to hell with it. No, I am not attracted to Krew. Though I am not personally attracted to either of you, you would be more my type than he would be.”

Oh.I cocked my head. “You’remarried?”

She gave me a nod. “Yes. I found the love of my life and I married her.”

Okay. All of that made sense. “So how are you even still in the Assemblages if you aremarried?Didn’t you have to file all the same paperwork I did? Discussing your marital status?”
