“Fine,” I agreed, realizing he was also meaning the extra guards, the king’s guards, and possibly even the disloyal present too. “We’ll all go.” I paused then said loudly. “Everyone to the dancefloor!” As they all took off, I added, “But keep away from the fire, please!”
Owen pressed his lips together. “Well done.”
“Dance, Mr. Owen?” Alani asked putting her small hand out.
Not able to deny such cuteness, he of course said, “Of course, honey. Let’s dance.”
Krew grabbed me by the waist and we headed into the dancing once more, laughing as we went. I couldn’t remember a day that was as fun and full of laughter as this one.
At one point Owen yelled, “Switch.”
Alani was handed to Krew and that left me to dance with Owen.
I raised my eyebrows at him.
“Just proving a point,” he offered.
I laughed as we began dancing, skipping away.
“Point proven,” I gasped a few beats later.
He grinned. “Good. I’ll go hand you back before the locals whisper.”
I waved a hand at the air. “They already are. I’ve heard mumblings of ‘both Assemblages’ multiple times tonight. Even heard someone say I wasn’t even that pretty.”
Owen scrunched up his nose. “Jealous pricks. All of them.”
He was right, but I wasn’t truly that bothered. Being in the castle forced me to develop more of a spine in handling such things. At this point, I may even have a double spine. I was numb to all the whispers.
Alani ran to us, and Owen picked her up and swung her away as Krew was there, pulling me into him.
“Having fun?” he asked.
I was out of breath but happy. “Entirely.”
As we spun by the violin man, he called my name.
I stopped, Krew following suit as we went back toward him.
He bowed toward Krew as we approached. “Your Grace, will the two of you do us an honor and show us how they dance in the castle, if I play you a slower tune for the next song?”
“Our way is more fun though, Mr. Terq,” I offered.
He grinned. “Oh I know, but it is not every day we get to have one of the heir princes at our Harvest Festival, now is it?”
Though I didn’t enjoy the extra attention, I realized it wasn’t just about me, so I found myself nodding. “All right.”
“We’d be honored,” Krew added.
As soon as that song wrapped up, the band members scooted everyone off that section of the makeshift dancefloor, giving us space.
“Our way is still more fun,” I said loudly to Mr. Terq.
It elicited some laughter from the people watching.
Mr. Terq started up, and Krew brought me into proper dance hold. Of course, the song ended up being my father’s favorite. I had to close my eyes a moment, wishing he was here.
“This is the song?” Krew asked gently.
