I faced Chase. He carried a takeout bag with Chinese script. “Hey. I was just leaving.”
Chase looked between me and the door. “Aren’t you here to see Asher? Did he not answer?”
I opened my mouth to spew some half-ass lie and book it out of there when the red door swung open.
Asher stood in the doorway, no phone in hand, eyeing me up from my boots to my messy ponytail. He’d changed into a fresh green sweater and a pair of black joggers.
“Blair?” He tilted his head to the side. I hated how my stomach flipped when he said my name. “What are you doing here?”
“Hey, uh… I was just dropping by to make sure you were ready for the fight tonight. I wanted to make sure our plan was still in place.”
I was pretty sure Asher didn’t believe me. Thankfully, he didn’t call me out.
“Everything is in order,” he replied.
“Good.”
“Have dinner with us,” Chase offered as awkward silence threatened to descend. He held up the takeout bag in demonstration.
“No,” I blurted quickly, earning two sets of questioning eyes. “I mean, thank you, but I already ate with my pack.”
“Okay.” Chase lowered the bag. “Are you sure there’s nothing else we can help you with?” His eyes flickered to his packmate.
Mortification flooded me as I realized my best friend might’ve told Chase the reason for my impromptu visit.
“N-no. I’m good.”
Chase muttered under his breath. Then, he turned to Asher. “Ash, do you have anything you need to speak with Blair about?” The blond shifter widened his eyes, and jerked his head my direction, all but screaming at Asher to talk to me about our bond.
Damnit, Stephanie.
She must’ve told him.
Asher raised a brow. He looked between me and his friend, then said, “No.”
That’s all he said: “No.”
Inwardly, I cringed. I couldn’t believe I almost made a fool of myself by suggesting Asher and I give the bond between us a shot. Talk about delusional.
I managed to keep my true feelings from showing on my face, and I cleared my throat. “Well, glad we got that all cleared up.” I took another step towards the stairs. “You two should eat and rest. You’ll need to be ready for Tyler and whatever nasty tricks the sorcerers plan to pull.”
Not giving either male the chance to respond, I turned and power-walked down the walkway, practically running down the steps once I reached the stairwell.
I didn’t take a breath until I was safely seated in Stephanie’s rental car and the door was shut.
I rested my arms on the wheel and let my head bang against my forearms. That was too close.
I couldn’t believe I’d almost gone against my better judgment and considered starting a relationship.
There was a reason I’d avoided one for so long.
I didn’t need any distractions. My sole focus should be preparing to become the next Summit alpha.
Thank goodness I’d overheard Asher talking on the phone.
Honestly, I dodged a bullet. I was lucky.
So, why did my heart feel like it had been stomped on by Asher’s black combat boots?
