I closed my eyes and exhaled. Might as well get this over with.
I turned around. Concern lined Asher’s eyes, lessening a small bit of my irritation. “He’s resting. The healer said he’s going to be fine.”
“I’m glad to hear it.”
I waited for Asher to say something else, but he just stood there, watching me.
I wasn’t in the mood for this.
“Look, Asher. I’m beat. I don’t have the energy for whatever,” I gestured to him and his silent stare, “thisis. I’ll talk to you later.” I walked away, determined to hide in my cabin and lick my wounds over my failure, but Asher’s next words knocked me off balance, stopping me in my tracks.
“A human didn’t attack Hunter, Blair. It was a sorcerer.”
Thirteen
“What?”I whirled back around to gauge Asher’s expression. His lips pressed into a firm line and honesty gleamed in his gaze. He was serious.
“A human didn’t attack Hunter,” he repeated, taking a step closer.
“How can you be so sure?” I pitched my voice low, all too aware of the shifters around us. Their enhanced hearing meant they were all within hearing distance.
“Because I sensed magic all over your partner.”
I choked on a gasp.
Swinging my head from left to right, I gave pointed looks to the shifters walking nearby and said, “We should talk inside.”
I didn’t know how long my father would be with Hunter, but we would have the place to ourselves for now. I ignored the thrill the thought elicited. Now was not the time for traitorous fantasies.
“They can’t hear me,” Asher stated, taking another step. “I have my own magic, remember?”
My jaw fell open. I snapped it close and sputtered, “I-I thought that was just Chase.”
“No, it’s not just Chase,” he smirked, then explained, “A spell surrounds us. No one can see or hear us unless they penetrate the barrier.”
Mother Moon… did all the Wilds Pack have magic?
Were they all half-breeds?
Why in the world would they hide themselves away with that sort of power?
Focus, Blair.
You can appease your curiosity about the Wilds Pack later.
I struggled to meet Asher’s eye. He and Chase were the first people I’d ever met who could wield magic, and I’d be lying if I said that didn’t make me nervous.
I cleared my throat. “When you said you sensed magic around Hunter, what did you mean?”
Asher took one last step until no more than a foot separated us. If he hadn’t already admitted to shielding us from notice, I would’ve thought his proximity was intended to keep us from being overheard.
“Magical residue always lingers after spells or charms are used,” he replied. “When I found Hunter, I could sense the sorcerer’s spell. It was used to mask the sound of his gun when he shot Hunter.”
So, that’s why no one heard the weapon go off.
My lips turned down, and I wondered why no one else questioned that fact.
“So, who shot Hunter?”
