Asher did not back down. “I think it would be wise to team up again.”

“Wise for who?” I challenged. “If you guys win the Alpha Games, my future is destroyed. Teaming up with you and Chase, helping you earn points in any way, does not benefit me at all.” Seriously, how did he not get that?

“What if Chase and I promise not to earn any points in the game?”

Psh.Like I would believe that.

“Pass.”

Asher’s jaw tightened. “I’m serious, Blair. We will vow to earn last place and accumulate no additional points if you agree to partner with us in the second game.”

Did he think I was an idiot?

Why would anyone agree to do that? It had to be a trick.

I wouldn’t take the bait. “My answer is still no.”

“Damnit, Blair.” Asher barked, making me jump.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, gathering himself before he continued.

I watched him with caution, ready to run into the safety of my cabin if he decided to lose his temper.

Once he was composed, Asher’s hand fell away. He met my gaze with determination and sincerity. “Don’t you understand, Blair? You shouldn’t be alone during the games. It’s not safe. The sorcerer could have targeted Hunter because he was a Summit shifter.”

Fear and shock jolted through me from my head to my toes. “Why would you think that?” I licked my dry lips. “What do you know that I don’t?”

Asher looked about to reply, but he pressed his lips together instead.

I stared at him, waiting for him to offer an explanation.

He never did.

Anger overshadowed my fear.

“You’re an ass,” I hissed. “You’re trying to scare me to get your way!”

He frowned at my accusation. “I’m not.”

I didn’t believe him.

“Whatever. This conversation is over.” I spun on my heel and stomped to my cabin. I expected Asher to say something to stop me from leaving, but silence settled behind me.

The nerve of Asher—trying to plant irrational seeds of fear in my head—all to make me take him up on his offer.

It was devious and dishonest.

And it hurt…

I slammed the cabin door shut. A quick glance out the front window revealed Asher’s muscular back as he walked away.

I shouldn’t be bothered enough to feel the betrayal twisting in my gut. I was busy contemplating how to rid myself of the horrible emotion when my cellphone rang.

I grabbed the device from the end table where it was charging.

Stephanie’s beaming smile filled the screen.

I really wasn’t in the mood to speak with anyone, but after what happened today, I could use a friendly chat with my best friend.
