I swiped to answer the call. “Hey, Steph.”
“Blair! I just got off the phone with Dad. I can’t believe Hunter was shot by a human!”
Thanks to Asher, I couldn’t either.
“I know. It’s crazy.” I settled on the oversized chair closest to the unlit fireplace, bending my knees and bringing them to my chest.
“Dad said you weren’t hurt, but I couldn’t relax until I heard it from you.”
“I’m okay,” I reassured her. “I wasn’t with Hunter when it happened.”
“Yeah, that’s what Dad said.” A pause. “Why weren’t you with him?"
I exhaled a heavy breath. Then, I explained most of what had transpired the last twenty-four hours; including the fact Asher and Chase were the guys we met at the bar in Denver.
“I can’t believe they’re shiftersandfrom the Wilds Pack.” My best friend, unsurprisingly, chose to focus on that part of my story.
I threw my head back and stared at the wood beams crossing the ceiling. “Me either.”
“How did they do it?”
I considered telling Stephanie about Chase’s magic, but the words wouldn’t form on my lips.
“I’m not sure,” I lied. “Must be some secret Wilds’ Pack gift or something.”
“Must be,” Stephanie agreed.
I bit my lip. “How’re things at home?”
Stephanie jumped at the opportunity to share the latest pack gossip. Naturally, it dealt with a romantic entanglement.
“And Lucy seems hell-bent on denying any man who isn’t her fated mate,” my best friend rounded out her story, “but Steven is determined to win her over. Poor guy. He’s going to be so broken when this is all over.”
Steven and Lucy were two single shifters in our pack. Lucy was a year older than us, but Steven was our age. The male had his eye on Lucy for years now, but he’d held off pursuing her until he came of age. No family would approve of their son or daughter mating before reaching twenty-one.
One drunken night, at one of Stephanie’s infamous lakeside parties, Steven had confessed how badly he wanted Lucy to go out with him. Both Stephanie and I had encouraged him, but Lucy didn’t give him the time of day.
Apparently, the leggy brunette wouldn’t settle for anything less than a Mother blessed, fated mate.
I tried not to judge Lucy, but it was hard. The chances of finding your fated mate were a thousand to one. It was short-sighted of Lucy to turn down such a great guy. Steven wouldn’t wait forever.
At least, I hope he wouldn’t.
There were plenty of females in our pack who would love to mate with a guy like him.
Not me, of course.
I was too focused on preparing to become alpha.
But someone else, for sure.
If Stephanie wasn’t so against mating, I would think she and Steven a good match. They both liked going out and shared a similar taste in music. Unfortunately, my best friend was too flighty for the good-hearted guy.
“What would you do?” Stephanie’s question caught me off guard.
“What would I do about what?”
She sighed. “You weren’t even listening to me, were you?”
