“Of course, I was.”

“Oh? So, you heard me ask what you would do if you were in Lucy’s shoes?”

Whoops.I hadn’t heard that.

“I would give Steven a chance,” I answered confidently.

Stephanie snorted. “You totally weren’t listening. I asked what you would do if you were Lucy and you agreed to mate with someone, but then you met your fated mate.”

Yikes.

That was a hard one.

Mating was the equivalent of a human marriage, but arguably more sacred. Shifters shared their souls during a mating, creating a bond that gifted the couple awareness of their mate’s feelings, thoughts, and even their physical location.

If Lucy agreed to mate with someone, they would share that connection. But if she met her fated mate, she would feel pulled to that male as well.

Would the connection with her fated mate be strong enough to lure her away from her committed partner? Or would her existing connection win out?

“I would stay with my chosen mate,” I told Stephanie. “If I made a promise to someone, I would keep it.”

“But he would be yourfated,” Stephanie played devil’s advocate. “How could you deny the one the Mother Moon created for you?”

“If I was meant to be with my fated, then I would trust the Mother to introduce us before I mated with anyone else. If She didn’t, then I wasn’t meant to be with him.”

“Ugh, you always think so logically about these things.” I heard the pout in my best friend’s voice.

I laughed. “I’m sorry. What did you want me to say? That I would abandon my mate and run off into the sunset with my fated mate? Consequences be damned?”

“Yes! That would be the romantic answer.”

I smiled and shook my head. “You’re ridiculous.”

“Romance is not ridiculous.”

“I never said it was, but there has to be more than romance when you’re talking about spending your life with someone. Otherwise, when romance fades, you’ll be miserable.”

“Romance doesn’t have to fade, Miss Debbie Downer.” Stephanie huffed into the phone. She groaned. “I don’t know why I bother asking you these things.”

Me either.

I decided to change the subject. “Are you going to come up to see Hunter with your stepmom?” Before Beta Nathan had left Hunter’s bedside, I’d overheard him tell my dad that his mate would be flying up to see her stepson.

“I’m not sure. Knowing Hunter, he will be pissy when Angelina shows up. He hates being coddled.”

“Well, if he’s already going to be upset, might as well come and show your support for your best friend and future alpha.” I held my breath, hoping she’d say yes.

After seeing how many pack members traveled to support the other competitors, I was itching to have more people cheering for me on the figurative sidelines.

“Blair Hemmings, are you saying you need me?”

“If that will get you to come, then yes.”

Stephanie chuckled. “Girl, you don’t need to ask me twice. Of course, I’ll come. I’ll tell Angelina to book me a seat on her flight.”

My heart lifted. “Really? Just like that? Don’t you have work?”

“You’re my best friend, Blair. Work can deal without me. Honestly, I was kind of bummed when you didn’t ask me to come in the first place.”
