I’d remained silent, letting them work through their disagreement, but my ears perked up when Asher mentioned his skills.
“What, exactly, do you think you can do alone?” I asked Asher, intrigued by the mysterious magic he had at his disposal. If his presence didn’t fluster me so much, I would love to sit down with him and ask him all about his abilities.
“Enough to get up there unnoticed.”
“You cannot scale that cliff,” Chase repeated.
“Who said anything about scaling a cliff?” Asher raised a brow.
His partner frowned. “Are you talking about what I think you’re talking about?”
“Yes.”
I cleared my throat. “Um, anyone going to fill me in?”
Chase and Asher looked at me and at the same time said, “No.”
I bristled, ready to object, when Asher held a finger up to his lips. His eyes narrowed as he scanned our surroundings.
I closed my mouth and strained my ears, trying to pick up whatever he’d heard.
A minute passed. I didn’t hear a thing.
Asher lowered his hand. He whispered, “I’ll be back in five.”
Then, without warning, he disappeared.
I didn’t mean he rushed off and got lost in the trees.
No.
Asherliterallydisappeared.
I muffled my gasp with my hands, whirling around to try and see where Asher went, but he was justgone.
Not a single trace of his movements could be seen in the forest around us, and I’d completely lost his scent.
“I guess he figured showing would be easier than telling you,” Chase murmured with a semi-apologetic grin.
“You guys are ridiculous,” I huffed. I was beginning to wonder what the magical shifterscouldn’tdo. “How do the rest of the packs not know about your… gifts?”
“We never said they didn’t know.”
I let that sink in.
“Well, I’ve never learned about your pack’sabilities.” It might seem silly, but I didn’t want to say the word magic out loud. I grew up being told to be wary of sorcerers and their magic—even talking about it was frowned upon. It was a hard lesson to unlearn.
“When you become alpha, you would learn about us, I’m sure.”
Surprise filled me.
“WhenI become alpha?” I pressed. “Are you and Asher planning to lose the Alpha Games and let me return to the Summit Pack to live my life?” A girl could only hope.
Chase met my gaze. “Who said us winning meant you didn’t get to be the Summit alpha?”
Um… common sense.
“I can’t become alpha if I marry into another pack.”
